Bunbury Road District
The Bunbury Road District was an early form of local government area in the region surrounding Bunbury, Western Australia from 1899 to 1950. It was established as the Bunbury Suburban Road District on 26 May 1899, the "suburban" designation distinguishing it from the existing Bunbury Road District (which would be renamed the Capel Road District on 26 June 1907). It was established due to strong protests from residents of Bunbury and surrounds as to the poor state of the roads leading into Bunbury and the perceived disinterest from the Capel-based Bunbury Road Board, with the Bunbury Chamber of Commerce supporting a petition to the government for a new suburban road district. The separation was opposed by the existing Bunbury Road Board, who argued that it would take away a valuable portion of their district. There are 137 local government areas of Western Australia (LGAs), which are areas, towns and districts in Western Australia that manage their own affairs to the extent permitted by the ''Local Government Act 1995''. The ''Local Government Act 1995'' also makes provision for regional local governments (referred to as "regional councils", established by two or more local governments for a particular purpose. Bunbury, Western Australia
Bunbury is a coastal city in the Australian state of Western Australia, approximately south of the state capital, Perth. It is the state's third most populous city after Perth and Mandurah, with a population of approximately 75,000. Located at the south of the Leschenault Estuary, Bunbury was established in 1836 on the orders of Governor James Stirling, and named in honour of its founder, Lieutenant (at the time) Henry Bunbury. A port was constructed on the existing natural harbour soon after, and eventually became the main port for the wider South West region. Further economic growth was fuelled by completion of the South Western Railway in 1893, which linked Bunbury with Perth. Shire Of Capel
The Shire of Capel is a local government area in the South West region of Western Australia, taking in the land between the cities of Bunbury and Busselton about south of the state capital, Perth. The Shire covers an area of , and its seat of government is the town of Capel. The Shire of Capel has 29 km of beach frontage onto Geographe Bay including access at Forrest Beach, Peppermint Grove Beach, Minninup Beach and Dalyellup Beach. The eight kilometer stretch of Stirling Beach (commencing at the Capel River, north to the Minninup Beach access at Rich Road) has no public access points since all the adjacent land is privately owned. Capel, Western Australia
Capel is a town in the South West region of Western Australia, located south of Perth and midway between Bunbury and Busselton. The town is located on the Capel River and is approximately above sea level. History The Capel area was originally inhabited by the Wardandi Noongar people. Colonists visited the region early in the history of colonial Western Australia. The Capel River was visited by Frederick Ludlow in 1834, but it was not given an English name until the Bussell family settled in the area soon afterwards. The name honours Capel Carter Brockman (1839–1924), daughter of John Bussell (1803–1875), herself named after a Miss Capel Carter, a cousin of the Bussells in England with whom Bussell family members corresponded. The City of Bunbury is a local government area in the South West region of Western Australia, covering an area of along the coast about south of Perth, the capital of Western Australia. The City of Bunbury is one of four local governments comprising the Greater Bunbury sub-region. As at the 2016 Census, the City of Bunbury had an estimated population of almost 32,000. History The Municipality of Bunbury was established on 21 February 1871. It absorbed part of the abolished Bunbury Road District, which had surrounded the municipality, on 20 January 1950, leading to the formation of a new Suburban Ward. The Shire of Harvey is a local government area of Western Australia. Harvey is located in the state's South West region, approximately 140 km south of Perth, and includes some of Bunbury's northern suburbs. The shire covers an area of 1,728 km² and had a population of approximately 26,500 as at the 2016 Census. Around 12% of the population are of Southern or Eastern European origin. Ross McLarty
Sir Duncan Ross McLarty, (17 March 1891 – 22 December 1962) was an Australian politician and the 17th Premier of Western Australia. Early life McLarty was born in Pinjarra, Western Australia, the youngest of seven children of Edward McLarty, a farmer and grazier and member of the Western Australian Legislative Council, and his wife Mary Jane, née Campbell. He attended Pinjarra State School and the Perth Boys' High School. On 12 January 1916 he enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force at the Blackboy Hill depot. On 27 March he was promoted to corporal and assigned to the 44th Battalion, arriving in England on 21 July. The 44th Battalion departed England for the Western Front on 25 November 1916. McLarty was promoted to sergeant on 29 March 1917. In June 1918, McLarty was awarded the Military Medal for "bravery in the field" on 25 January 1918 at Passchendaele.The service record does not provide the location of McLarty on 25 January 1918.
