Bulldogs Hall Of Fame
The Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs are a professional rugby league club in the National Rugby League (NRL), the premier rugby league football competition in Australia. Based in Belmore, a suburb of Sydney, the Bulldogs in 1935 were admitted to the New South Wales Rugby League (NSWRL) competition, a predecessor of the current NRL competition. The Bulldogs won their first premiership in just their fourth season (1938). At the time it made them the quickest club (barring the founding clubs) to win a premiership after admission to the competition, a record which was only recently beaten in 1999 by the Melbourne Storm. They won a second premiership in 1942 but then had to wait another 38 years before breaking through for a third title in 1980. During the 80s, the Bulldogs were a dominant force in the competition appearing in five Grand Finals, winning four of them. National Rugby League
The National Rugby League (NRL) is an Australasian rugby league club competition which contains clubs from New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, the Australian Capital Territory and New Zealand. The NRL formed in 1998 as a joint partnership between the Australian Rugby League (ARL) and media giant News Corporation-controlled Super League, in the aftermath of the 1990s Super League war, in which both ran parallel to each other in 1997. The partnership was dissolved in 2012, with control of the NRL going to the re-constituted ARL, which was re-structured with an independent board of directors and renamed the Australian Rugby League Commission. NRL matches are played in Australia and New Zealand from March to October. Each team plays 24 matches, with the highest placed team at the end of the regular season awarded the minor premiership. Johnny Greaves (rugby League)
Johnny Greaves (born 8 May 1943) is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1960s and 1970s. He played for St. George, Canterbury-Bankstown, New South Wales and for Australia. Playing career Greaves' junior club was Renown United. Starting with the St George Dragons where he had been a local junior Greaves, like Brian James battled for recognition in the star-studded Dragons line-up who boasted a choice of centres with Reg Gasnier, Billy Smith and Johnny Riley in their squad. Nonetheless Greaves managed 23 first grade appearances in his two years at senior level with the club. He shifted to Canterbury where he became a first-grade regular and from where he was chosen in 1966 for New South Wales and later that year to represent Australia in the two Tests of the domestic Ashes series against Great Britain. Frank Sponberg
Francis Anthony Sponberg (18 May 1913 − 17 June 2000) was a professional rugby league footballer who played for Western Suburbs, Canterbury-Bankstown and for the New South Wales Rugby League team. He is the younger brother of Bill Sponberg - who also played for Canterbury. Club career Of Swedish descent, Sponberg had a very successful club career, ultimately winning three grand finals with two different clubs. A Canterbury junior, Sponberg made his debut for Western Suburbs in Round 6 of the 1932 season. He played for Wests for three seasons between 1932 and 1934. Sponberg played in the final against South Sydney after a semi-final win against Balmain. However, as minor premiers, Souths were allowed right of challenge, and so a rematch of the grand final was played a week later. Kevin Ryan (rugby)
Kevin James Ryan, born 26 August 1934 in Ipswich, Queensland is an Australian, former state parliamentarian and local mayor, barrister and advocate. In the 1950s and 1960s he was an Australian dual-code rugby international representative and had previously been a Queensland amateur boxing champion in 1958 and 1959, who trialled for the 1960 Olympics. Steve Price (rugby League)
Steven John Price (born 12 March 1974) is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1990s and 2000s. An Australian international representative, he retired as Queensland's most capped State of Origin forward. Price captained Sydney club, the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs (with whom he won the 1995 and 2004 premierships) as well as New Zealand NRL club, the Warriors. Henry Porter (rugby League Footballer)
Henry "Tarzan" Porter (1910–1990) was an Australian rugby league footballer who played in the 1930s and 1940s. He played club football for Newtown and Canterbury-Bankstown in the New South Wales Rugby Football League premiership, winning premierships with both clubs. He also played for Fortitude Valley in the Brisbane Rugby League premiership. George Peponis
George Peponis (born Georgios Peponis el, Γιώργος Πεπόνης; on 3 September 1953) is a Greek Australian former professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1970s and 1980s. An Australia national and New South Wales state representative , he played in the NSWRFL Premiership for the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs, with whom he won the 1980 Grand Final. He also captained the Bulldogs and New South Wales, and played in eight Test matches for Australia between 1978 and 1980, captaining the side on five consecutive occasions between 1979 and 1980. Edgar Newham
Edgar Wynton Newham (1914–1995) was a rugby league footballer for Canterbury-Bankstown, New South Wales and for the Australian national side. Rugby league career Edgar Newham played his first game of Rugby League at 19 years of age. By the time he was 24, Edgar Newham joined Canterbury-Bankstown from Cowra, New South Wales and played 9 seasons with the club between 1938-1945 and 1948. He found immediate success when Canterbury won their first premiership, beating Eastern Suburbs Roosters 19–6 in the 1938 Final. Newham played on the wing in the Final. Four years later in 1942, Newham crossed for 5 tries in a mid-week match against the Balmain Tigers that decided the minor-premiership. Stephen Charles Mortimer (born 15 July 1956), also nicknamed "Turvey", is an Australian former rugby league footballer who played as a . Mortimer played a Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs club record 272 first-grade games between 1976–88, winning four premierships with the club during the 1980s. Mortimer's two younger brothers Peter and Chris also played for the club. Chris Mortimer (born 19 August 1959 in Wagga Wagga, New South Wales) is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s for the Canterbury-Bankstown, Penrith, New South Wales and for the Australian national side. Playing career Chris Mortimer was the youngest of the three famous brothers to play for Canterbury during the late 1970s, and 1980s. Terry Lamb
Terence John Lamb (born 15 September 1961), also nicknamed "Baa", is an Australian former rugby league footballer and coach. He played 350 games, with the Western Suburbs (1980–1983) and Canterbury (1984–1996). Lamb was known for his support of the ball-carrier - his ability to be in the right place at the right time netted him 164 tries. This earned him the moniker of "The Back-up Man". He also kicked 386 goals and 44 field goals, for 1,442 points in first grade. He played for New South Wales in State of Origin and Australia.
