Bukit Timah Expressway
The Bukit Timah Expressway (BKE) is a highway in Singapore that starts at the Pan Island Expressway in Bukit Timah and travels north to the Woodlands Checkpoint and the Johor–Singapore Causeway in Woodlands. History On 22 May 1982, tenders were called to build the expressway and construction began thereafter. Construction of the expressway began in 1983 and it was built in two stages, the first stage from Woodlands to Mandai Road and the second from Mandai Road to the Pan-Island Expressway. Due to the hilly nature of the Bukit Timah area the second stage of the expressway went through, explosives were used to clear the area for construction. During the construction, the new road, Bukit Panjang Road was opened from BKE all the way to Woodlands Road, and new interchanges at Mandai Road and Woodlands Road were also added as well. Woodlands Checkpoint
The Woodlands Checkpoint is one of Singapore's two land border checkpoints, connecting ground traffic with Malaysia. It services the vehicular traffic (cars, buses, lorries, motorcycles) along with pedestrians that goes through the Johor–Singapore Causeway. The only other Singapore land border checkpoint (Tuas Checkpoint) services the Malaysia–Singapore Second Link. Expressways In Singapore
The expressways of Singapore are special roads that allow motorists to travel quickly from one urban area to another. Construction of the system was authorized when construction of the Pan Island Expressway began in 1962. All of them are dual carriageways with grade-separated access. Mandai Road
Mandai Road () is a major road located in Mandai, in the northern area of Singapore. The road starts from Woodlands Road and ends at the junction of Sembawang Road and Upper Thomson Road. The road was built in 1855 in a jungle and appeared in the Franklin and Jackson ''Plan of Singapore'' (1828) as a river indicated as "R. Mandi". It has been said the name of the road comes from a tree known as the "Mandai tree". As the road is the main access to the Singapore Zoo and the Night Safari, it is common to refer to the zoos collectively as the "Mandai Zoo". The Mandai Crematorium and Columbarium is also located in the area, and is the resting places for those honourable leaders, such as Lee Kuan Yew, the former and first Prime Minister of Singapore. The Pan Island Expressway (Abbreviated as: PIE) is the oldest and longest expressway in Singapore. It is also Singapore's longest road. The expressway runs from the East Coast Parkway near Changi Airport in the east to Tuas in the west and has a total length of .
