The City of Darwin is a local government area of the Northern Territory, Australia. It includes the central business district of the capital, Darwin City, and represents two-thirds of its metropolitan population. Beagle Gulf is a gulf in the Northern Territory of Australia which opens on its west side to the Timor Sea. Leanyer is a northern suburb of Darwin, in the Northern Territory of Australia. History The name Leanyer was in general use for the area at the time of development and first appeared on 1869 survey plans. Leanyer is thought to be derived from an Aboriginal word. During World War II Leanyer was established as a military area, there was an Army post and a military equipment storage facility, gun turrets were also set up along the coast of Lee Point. It was disbanded soon after the end of World War II and residential development of Leanyer started during the 1970s. The roads and streets within the suburb are named after coastal features and rivers in the northern part of the Northern Territory. Micket Creek consists of land located on the south coast of Shoal Bay. It is named after Micket Creek, which is a stream flowing through the locality into Shoal Bay and whose name first appears in 1869 in the records associated with the survey of what is now the Darwin hinterland overseen by George Goyder, the Surveyor-General of South Australia. Its boundaries and name were gazetted on 29 October 1997. The locality contains the Micket Creek Shooting Complex, a facility opened in 1997 to accommodate the needs of four Darwin-based shooting organisations and which is operated by the NT Firearms Council under lease from the Northern Territory Government.
