Buffalo Bandits
The Buffalo Bandits are a professional box lacrosse team in the East Division of the National Lacrosse League (NLL). They play at the KeyBank Center in Buffalo, New York. The Bandits played in the Major Indoor Lacrosse League from 1992 to 1997, then in its successor the NLL since 1998. The Bandits are owned by Hockey Western New York LLC, a division of Pegula Sports and Entertainment led by Terry Pegula who also owns the Buffalo Sabres and the Buffalo Bills. History The Bandits played their first season in 1992. They played home games at Buffalo Memorial Auditorium sharing with the Buffalo Sabres until its closure in 1996. The Bandits became the first expansion franchise in MILL/NLL history to win a championship in its first season. Neal Powless is an Iroquois lacrosse player from the Onondaga Nation near Syracuse, New York. He is the son of Chief Irving Powless Jr. and brother to Barry Powless and Bradley Powless. He was a three-time All-American in field lacrosse at Nazareth College. Powless also played on the Iroquois Nationals at the World Lacrosse Championships in 1994, 1998, 2002 and 2006. Delby Powless (born July 3, 1980), is a Mohawk lacrosse player from the Six Nations of the Grand River First Nation near Brantford, Ontario. He was born in Six Nations, Ontario, and is the grandnephew of Ross Powless and cousin of Gaylord Powless, both of whom are in the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame. Ryan Powell (born February 23, 1978 in West Carthage, New York) is a four-time All-American lacrosse player at Syracuse University and was on the US national team roster in 2006 and 2010. Background Powell did not begin playing organized lacrosse until he was in the seventh grade. He is the second oldest in the family behind his brother Casey Powell, and older than Michael Powell. Powell attended Carthage Senior High School where he was the quarterback for the football team and played on the lacrosse team. In 1996, Powell chose to attend Syracuse University, following his brother Casey. At Syracuse, he was a four-time All-American (his brother Casey was also a four-time All-American). Marty O'Neill (born June 6, 1964, in Winnipeg, Manitoba) is a former lacrosse player and former General Manager of the Minnesota Swarm (2004-2011) and Philadelphia Wings (2001-2004) of the National Lacrosse League (NLL). O'Neill, a goaltender, joined the Boston Blazers of the Major Indoor Lacrosse League (predecessor of the NLL) in 1993.O'Neill played eight season of Pro lacrosse, five seasons with the Boston Blazers, one with the Syracuse Smash, and two with the Buffalo Bandits before retiring after the 2000 season. Randy Mearns (born May 28, 1969) is a former lacrosse player and the current head coach of the St. Bonaventure Bonnies men’s lacrosse team. After a 9-year career in the National Lacrosse League, Mearns became the head coach of the Canisius Golden Griffins men’s lacrosse team, where he would coach for 19 seasons before leaving in 2017 to coach for the newly-created lacrosse program at St. Bonaventure.
