Art Buchwald
Arthur Buchwald (October 20, 1925 – January 17, 2007) was an American humorist best known for his column in ''The Washington Post''. At the height of his popularity, it was published nationwide as a syndicated column in more than 500 newspapers. His column focused on political satire and commentary. Buchwald had first started writing as a paid journalist in Paris after World War II, where he wrote a column on restaurants and nightclubs, "Paris After Dark", for the ''Paris Herald Tribune''. He was part of a large American expatriate community in those years. After his return to the United States in 1962, he continued to publish his columns and books for the rest of his life. He received the Pulitzer Prize in 1982 for Outstanding Commentary, and in 1991 was elected to the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters, in addition to other awards. Nathaniel Buchwald (1890–1956) was a 20th-century, left-leaning Jewish-American theater critic, writer, and scholar of Yiddish theater who wrote in Yiddish and English and translated from Yiddish and Russian into English. Background Nathaniel Buchwald was born Naftoli Bukhvald on April 14, 1890, in Lublin, Volhynia, Ukraine (then, party of the Russian Empire). He studied at a religious primary school and then a public school. In 1910, Buchwald emigrated to America. He studied at the University of Georgia, Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute, and in 1918 obtained a BS in Chemistry from New York University. David Buchwald is an American politician and attorney who served as a member of the New York State Assembly, representing Assembly District 93, which includes the towns of Bedford, Harrison, Lewisboro, Mount Kisco, New Castle, North Castle, North Salem, Pound Ridge and White Plains. He was first elected on November 6, 2012, when he defeated the incumbent office holder. Dedra S. Buchwald is an American epidemiologist. She is a full professor at the Washington State University and director of their Initiative for Research and Education to Advance Community Health. Early life and education Buchwald was born near Detroit, Michigan, to two German immigrants. As a teenager, she co-established a "Free School" which aimed at providing school-aged children with an alternative learning system. Naomi Lynn Reice Buchwald (born February 14, 1944) is a senior United States district judge of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. Personal Naomi Reice was born in 1944 in Kingston, New York, to Mr. and Mrs. Albert Reice. Charles von Buchwald (22 October 1880 in Bjerringbro, Viborg municipality, Viborg – 19 November 1951 in Hørsholm) was a Denmark, Danish amateur football (soccer) player, who played seven games as a Defender (football), defender for the Denmark national football team. Jed Z. Buchwald is Doris and Henry Dreyfuss Professor of History at Caltech. He was previously director of the Dibner Institute for the History of Science and Technology at MIT. Guido Ulrich Buchwald (born 24 January 1961) is a German former professional football player. Throughout his career he played as a defender. He is currently director of football of Stuttgarter Kickers. The best game of Buchwald's career was the final of the 1990 FIFA World Cup victory for West Germany against Argentina where he effectively marked Diego Maradona for almost the entire match, earning him the nickname "Diego". Rabbi Ephraim Buchwald is one of the leaders in the movement of Orthodox Jewish outreach in America today. Early life Buchwald studied at Yeshiva University, where he was a student of Rabbi Dr. Joseph B. Soloveitchik. He was ordained in 1975. He served from 1973 for 15 years as the Director of Education at Lincoln Square Synagogue in New York City, which became one of the largest and most successful centers for adult Jewish education programs in America. Harold Buchwald, (February 22, 1928 – April 17, 2008) was a Jewish-Canadian lawyer. He was involved in various royal commissions on tax reform legislation and has lectured on corporation law and consumer protection. Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba to a Jewish family, the son of Frank Buchwald and Bessie Portigal, he received a BA in 1948, an LL.B in 1952, an LL.M in 1957, and an honorary LL.D in 1994 all from the University of Manitoba.
