__NOTOC__ Buchanan is a locality in the Northern Territory of Australia located in the territory's west adjoining the border with the state of Western Australia about south of the territory capital of Darwin and about south-west of the municipal seat in Katherine. The locality consists of the following land (from north to south) – the Malngin and the Malngin 2 Aboriginal Land Trusts and the Limbunya pastoral lease, the Kirkimbie, Bunda, Inverway and Riveren pastoral leases, and the Wallamunga and Birrindudu pastoral leases. It has an area of . The locality's boundaries and name were gazetted on 4 April 2007. Its name is derived from the Nathaniel Buchanan, a pioneering drover who first brought cattle overland from Queensland to the Northern Territory in 1877. The 2016 Australian census which was conducted in August 2016 reports that Buchanan had a population of 55 people. Kirkimbie
Kirkimbie Station is a pastoral lease that operates as a cattle station in the Northern Territory of Australia. Situated approximately west of Lajamanu and north east of Halls Creek near the border with Western Australia. The property occupies an area of and is composed of a mix of black soil plains covered in Mitchell and Flinders grass and red country that supports spinifex. It can support a herd of approximately 11,000 head of cattle and has an annual turn-off of about 5,500 head. The Division of Lingiari is an Australian electoral division in the Northern Territory that covers the entirety of the territory outside of the Division of Solomon, which covers Darwin and surrounding areas. The division also includes the Christmas and Cocos (Keeling) Islands. Lingiari includes all of the Northern Territory's remote Indigenous communities, most of whom vote when visited by mobile polling teams during the election campaign. The current MP is Marion Scrymgour, a member of the Australian Labor Party. Scrymgour herself is Indigenous and inherited Tiwi identity from her mother. 2016 Australian Census
The 2016 Australian census was the 17th national population census held in Australia. The census was officially conducted with effect on Tuesday, 9 August 2016. The total population of the Commonwealth of Australia was counted as – an increase of 8.8 per cent or people over the . Norfolk Island joined the census for the first time in 2016, adding 1,748 to the population. The ABS annual report revealed that $24 million in additional expenses accrued due to the outage on the census website. A drover in Australia is a person, typically an experienced stockman, who moves livestock, usually sheep, cattle, and horses "on the hoof" over long distances. Reasons for droving may include: delivering animals to a new owner's property, taking animals to market, or moving animals during a drought in search of better feed and/or water or in search of a yard to work on the livestock. The drovers who covered very long distances to open up new country were known as " overlanders". Nathaniel Buchanan
Nathaniel Buchanan (1826 – 23 September 1901) was an Australian pioneer pastoralist, drover and explorer. Early life Buchanan was born near Dublin, and was of Scottish descent the son of Lieutenant Charles Henry Buchanan, and his wife Annie, ''née'' White. He arrived in New South Wales with his parents in 1832, and as a young man was part owner with two brothers of Bald Blair station. In 1850 the brothers went to the California Gold Rush, but returned to Australia after a short stay to find that their station had been mismanaged and lost in their absence. During the next few years Buchanan had much experience of overlanding. Career In 1859 Buchanan explored new country with William Landsborough, principally on the tributaries of the Fitzroy River, Queensland, when both suffered many privations and were found just in time by a rescue party. Katherine is a town in the Northern Territory of Australia. It is situated on the Katherine River, after which it is named, southeast of Darwin.
