Buchan Bakers
The Buchan Bakers was an amateur basketball team located in Seattle, Washington and competed in the National Industrial Basketball League. The Bakers were one of the most popular teams of the Amateur Athletic Union, rising to fame in 1957 when the beat the Phillips 66ers in the AAU Tournament final. The team was sponsored by the Buchan Baking company, thus they adopted their name. During the 1955-56 season, the Buchan Bakers traveled to Asia, playing teams from Japan, China and they were the first AAU basketball team to play against Eastern European teams during the Cold War. The Buchan Bakers were active for 13 seasons winning the National AAU Championship, the Northwest AAU title six times, representing the United States in trips to Asia, Europe and behind the Iron Curtain. Amateur Athletic Association (basketball)
The Amateur Athletic Association is an amateur basketball league that was created in 1897. It hosts the annual AAU National Tournament. All players participating have to be amateurs. During the 1960s players who left college before the formation of the American Basketball League and American Basketball Association had three options: the National Basketball Association, the Eastern League or AAU basketball. And AAU basketball was attractive to many players who wished to remain eligible for the Olympics. Several AAU teams were sponsored by corporations which provided jobs to the players on their teams. Joe Cipriano is an American voice over actor, radio and TV on-air personality, and author. Early life and education Cipriano was born September 8, 1954, in Waterbury, Connecticut. He attended Watertown High School. Career Cipriano began his career as a broadcaster in Waterbury, Connecticut, while in high school. Bruno Boin
Bruno Boin (born ) is an American former basketball player known for his college career at the University of Washington in the 1950s. He was an NCAA All-American in 1957 as well as a first-team all- Pacific Coast Conference choice in 1958. A native of Seattle, Washington, Boin starred at Franklin High School, guiding his team to a state championship as a junior in 1954 before embarking on his college career. In Boin's three seasons as a Washington Husky he scored 1,336 points, was twice a team captain, and earned numerous all-conference and all-district honors. He dropped out of school before the start of the 1957–58 season in order to preserve his NCAA eligibility; the school had been caught violating recruiting regulations the year before and were going to be placed in a one-year postseason ban. Elgin Gay Baylor ( ; September 16, 1934 – March 22, 2021) was an American professional basketball player, coach, and executive. He played 14 seasons as a forward in the National Basketball Association (NBA) for the Minneapolis/Los Angeles Lakers. Philip Jordon (September 12, 1933 – June 7, 1965) was an American professional basketball player. He played seven seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Professional career A 6'10" center from Whitworth University, Jordon played seven seasons (1956–1963) in the National Basketball Association as a member of the New York Knicks, Detroit Pistons, Cincinnati Royals, and St. Louis Hawks. He averaged 10.9 points per game and 6.9 rebounds per game in his career. Jordon was a member of the Knicks' team that surrendered 100 points to the Philadelphia Warriors' Wilt Chamberlain on March 2, 1962, but he missed the game due to what was officially reported as influenza. Frank Fidler (12 August 1924 – 21 November 2009) was an English footballer who played as a forward, making Football League appearances for three clubs. Career Fidler started his career at Manchester United, however only made one amateur appearances for them during The War. He would be released to non-league Witton Albion, where he holds the record for the second-highest goalscorer in the club's history.
