Buch () is a German boroughs and localities of Berlin, locality (''Ortsteil'') within the Berlin borough (''Bezirk'') of Pankow. Situated on the Panke river, it is the city's northernmost quarter, chiefly known for its historic village centre and extended hospital premises. Geography The settlement area is located on the Barnim Plateau stretching in the northeast of the Berlin city centre up to the Oder–Havel Canal and the Oderbruch delta. Berlin's northernmost point is at the ''Rieselfelder'' meadows, a former sewage farm transformed into a rural area, part of the Buch Forest within the Barnim Nature Park. The landscape is marked by hill chains, Outwash plain, sandurs and small lakes such as the Bogensee. Along its border with the state of Brandenburg, Buch is surrounded by the municipalities of Wandlitz and Panketal (with the civil parishes of Zepernick, Röntgental and Neu Buch), both in the district of Barnim. Berlin is both a city and one of Germany’s federated states (city state). Since the 2001 administrative reform, it has been made up of twelve districts (german: Bezirke, ), each with its own administrative body. However, unlike the municipalities and counties of other German states, the Berlin districts are not territorial corporations of public law () with autonomous competencies and property, but simple administrative agencies of Berlin's state and city government, the City of Berlin forming a single municipality () since the Greater Berlin Act of 1920. Thus they cannot be equated to US or UK boroughs in the traditional meaning of the term.
