Bubba Brooks
David Kenneth Brooks, Jr., better known as Bubba Brooks or Bubber Brooks (May 29, 1922 in Fayetteville, North Carolina – April 11, 2002) was an American jazz tenor saxophonist. He was the brother of Tina Brooks. Brooks's first professional gig was with the medicine show of Pepper McAllister. He served in the Army during World War II, there he played with James Moody. He moved to New York City after his discharge in 1944, where he played at Minton's Playhouse and the Harlem Grill. He toured North Carolina in a band alongside Sonny Payne in 1947, then played with George Barkley at the Baby Grand in New York; he first recorded with Barkley around 1947 or 1948. He then played with Sonny Thompson from 1948 to 1957. In 1958 he worked with Jimmy McCracklin and in 1961 with Phil Upchurch; he also did session work with pop musicians in the 1960s. James A. "Bubber" Epps (born September 7, 1943) is an American politician. Epps is a retired paving contractor, living in Dry Branch. He previously served as a member of the Georgia House of Representatives from the 144th District, serving from 2008 until Jan. 14, 2019. He is a member of the Republican party. Clarence James "Bubber" Jonnard (November 23, 1897 – August 12, 1977) was a Major League Baseball catcher. He played for the Chicago White Sox in 1920, the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1922, the Philadelphia Phillies in 1926, 1927 and 1935, and the St. Louis Cardinals in 1929. He played 103 Major League games with 235 at bats, 54 hits, no home runs and 20 RBIs. His lifetime batting average was .230, with a .267 on-base percentage and a .268 slugging percentage. As a fielder, he caught 86 games with a fielding percentage of .960. On December 13, 1927, he was part of a trade in which the Phillies received pitcher Jimmy Ring and catcher Johnny Schulte from the Cardinals in exchange for Jonnard, infielder Jimmy Cooney and outfielder Johnny Mokan. James Wesley "Bubber" Miley (April 3, 1903 – May 20, 1932) was an American early jazz trumpet and cornet player, specializing in the use of the plunger mute. Early life (1903–1923) Miley was born in Aiken, South Carolina, United States, into a musical family. At the age of six, he and his family moved to New York City where, as a child, he occasionally sang for money on the streets, and later, at the age of 14, studied to play the trombone and cornet. In 1920, after having served in the Navy for 18 months, he joined a jazz formation named the Carolina Five, and remained a member for the next three years, playing small clubs and boat rides all around New York City. In American usage, "Bubba" is a term of endearment mainly given to boys. Being formed from the word "brother", it often indicates that someone is a "little brother". Etymology and history The linguist Ian Hancock has described similarities between the African Krio language and Gullah, the creole language of the Black people of the isolated Sea Islands of South Carolina, and points out that the Krio expression ('boy') appears in Gullah as , which may account for the "Bubba" of the American South.
