Bryn Griffiths (writer)
Brynllyn David Griffiths is a poet and writer, who has worked in Britain and Australia. His poems are often concerned with the ocean and the history of Wales. Bryn spent a very successful year as writer in residence at Swansea College of Further Education in the 1990s Biography Bryn Griffiths was born in Swansea, South Wales, but he lived much of his early life in the coastal countryside of West Wales before returning to St Thomas, near the Swansea waterfront. His poems are often concerned with the ocean and the history and landscapes of Wales, particularly the lower Swansea Valley, devastated by the Industrial Revolution, as exemplified in his first collection of verse, ''The Mask of Pity''. He went to sea at 17, "shipping out" as a merchant seaman for ten years from the Port of Swansea. ''The Welsh Outlook'' was a monthly magazine published from 1914 to 1933 in Wales, articulating a political viewpoint of progressive liberalism and cultural nationalism. Its first editor was Thomas Jones and the publication was funded by David Davies, 1st Baron Davies. The magazine was intended by Jones to provide a platform to discuss critically the changes in Welsh society of the time, while aiming for social progress. Its contributors and editorial team were drawn largely from Cardiff and South Wales. Although influential among the governing elite in Wales, it achieved sales of only 2,000, dropping markedly in the 1930s. The title (without an initial 'The') was revived by David Hewitt in 1965 when he launched a new magazine that aimed to "serve as a catalyst for public discussion throughout the country." The Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) was a union which covered waterside workers, seafarers, port workers, professional divers, and office workers associated with Australian ports. The MUA was formed in 1993 with merger of the Seamen's Union of Australia and the Waterside Workers' Federation of Australia. In 2017 the MUA had about 16,000 members.
