James Marr Brydone
James Marr Brydone (1779–29 March 1866), was a Scottish surgeon who served in the British fleet at the Battle of Trafalgar. He is best remembered for being the first person in the main British battle fleet to sight the Franco-Spanish fleet, and did so without the use of a glass. Biography Brydone was born in Selkirk, Scotland, a descendant of William Brydone, who was town clerk of Selkirk at the time of the Battle of Flodden. He was educated at the local school alongside Mungo Park and Charles Malcolm. He qualified as a doctor of medicine from Edinburgh University and, after local experience, in 1804 found himself serving as assistant surgeon aboard the East Indiaman ''Calcutta''. Whilst at sea the ship met a naval vessel whose surgeon had died. He was transferred over and thus began thirty years of service in the Royal Navy. Thomas Brydone
Thomas Brydone (14 April 1837 – 17 June 1904) was a New Zealand land-company manager, farm manager and freezing-industry developer. Brydone was born in West Linton, Peeblesshire, Scotland in 1837. He grew up in Blair Atholl and received his education at Perth Academy. As a land stewart, he first worked for the Earl of Buchan and then the Duke of Hamilton. After moving to England, he worked for the West of England Land Improvement Company and then for Lord Falmouth. From 1861, he was back in Scotland, initially with the Earl of Buchan and then as a part-owner of the Young's Paraffin Oil Company in 1866 and 1867; the business failed when cheaper paraffin oil became available from the United States. The New Zealand and Australian Land Company was formed in Glasgow in March 1866 and in the following year, Brydone became the organisation's superintendent for property located in New Zealand. Brydone, Southland
Brydone is a small farming locality in Southland, New Zealand, south west of Mataura. It was named after Thomas Brydone, the superintendent of Australia and New Zealand Land Company. He was the founder of the frozen meat and dairy industry in New Zealand and the dairy factory at Edendale, New Zealand Edendale is a town in the Southland region of New Zealand's South Island. The township is situated on the Southland Plains just to the west of the Mataura River. Patrick Brydone
Patrick Brydone, FRSE, FRS, FSAScot, FSA (5 January 1736 – 19 June 1818) was a Scottish traveller and author who served as Comptroller of the Stamp Office. Life Brydone was born in Coldingham, Berwickshire, on 5 January 1736, the son of Robert Brydone (1687–1761), the local Church of Scotland minister, and Elizabeth Dysart. After attending St. Andrews University, he went abroad as travelling tutor or companion (colloquially known as a bearleader), with William Beckford and some other gentlemen. In 1767 or 1768, soon after his return from Switzerland, he went abroad again with Beckford and two others as travelling preceptor. In 1770, he made a tour with these gentlemen through Sicily and Malta, the former island being but little known to travellers of that time. This tour forms the subject of his book, ''A Tour through Sicily and Malta, in a Series of Letters to William Beckford, Esq., of Somerly in Suffolk,'' published in 1773.
