Bryan Formhals
Bryan Formhals (born October 18, 1976) is an American photographer and editor, based in New York City. He co-edited the book ''Photographers' Sketchbooks'' (2014). Life and work Formhals was born in St. Cloud, Minnesota. He earned a degree in communication and journalism at nearby Saint John's University, Collegeville in 1999. He moved to Minneapolis and got a job working for a web company, transferring west to Santa Monica, Los Angeles County, California in 2004. In LA he took a class at The Second City doing improvisational comedy and wrote a screenplay. In 2005, unhappy with his screenplay and experiencing writer's block, he began taking photographs while walking around Hollywood and Downtown Los Angeles. This resulted in the series ''Genesee Ave.'' In 2009 he moved east to New York City, first to Greenpoint, Brooklyn and then in 2012 to Astoria, Queens. The College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University are two closely related private, Catholic higher education institutions in Minnesota. The College of Saint Benedict is a women's college located in St. Joseph, while Saint John's University is a men's college in Collegeville. Students at the institutions, both of which are Benedictine, have a shared curriculum and access to the resources of both campuses. Khalik Allah
Khalik Allah (born 1985) is an American filmmaker and photographer. His 2015 documentary film ''Field Niggas'' and his 2017 book ''Souls Against the Concrete'' depict people who inhabit the notorious Harlem corner of 125th Street (Manhattan), 125th Street and Lexington Avenue in New York City. His film ''Black Mother'' (2018) depicts people on the island of Jamaica. "He favours visual portraits of people on the street – filming their faces for several seconds as they pose as if for a still camera." ''The Independent'' is a British online newspaper. It was established in 1986 as a national morning printed paper. Nicknamed the ''Indy'', it began as a broadsheet and changed to tabloid format in 2003. The last printed edition was published on Saturday 26 March 2016, leaving only the online edition. Stephen McLaren (photographer)
Stephen McLaren is a Scottish photographer, writer, and curator, based in Los Angeles. He has edited various photography books published by Thames & Hudson—including ''Street Photography Now'' (2010)—and produced his own, ''The Crash'' (2018). He is a co-founder member of Document Scotland. McLaren's work has been shown at FACT in Liverpool as part of the Look – Liverpool International Photography Festival and in Document Scotland group exhibitions at Impressions Gallery, Bradford and at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Edinburgh. His work is held in the collection of the University of St Andrews. Rachel Sussman
Rachel Sussman (born 1975) is an American contemporary artist and photographer based in Brooklyn. Biography Born into a non-religious Jewish family, Sussman started photographing when she was about 10 years old. In a lecture given in 2019 at the Center for the Study of World Religions of Harvard Divinity School, she explained: "I grew up in a pretty abusive family, pretty rough childhood. And nature was one of the first things that I really connected with. It really without knowing it became a guiding force for me". She graduated from the School of Visual Arts in New York with a BFA, studied at the Bard College MFA program, and began a practice-based fine arts PhD at Central Saint Martins in London. Ken Schles
Ken Schles (born 1960) is an American photographer based in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, New York. He has published five monographs over 25 years. Schles' work is held in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Brooklyn Museum, Art Institute of Chicago, Museo D'Arte Contemporanea, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and others. Career Schles earned his BFA from Cooper Union in 1982. After continuing his studies at the New School for Social Research, he worked as a printer for a number of Magnum Photos photographers. Gus Powell
Gus Powell (1974) is an American street photographer. He was a member of the In-Public street photography collective. Powell has published two of his own photography books: ''The Company of Strangers'' (2003) and ''The Lonely Ones'' (2015), the latter with work spanning a decade. Elle Pérez
Elle Pérez (born 1989, Bronx, NY) is an American photographer whose work explores gender identity, intimacy, vulnerability, and the relationship between seeing and love. Pérez is a gender non-conforming trans artist. In 2019, Pérez was featured in Cultured Magazine's ''30 Under 35'' and in Forbes Magazine's ''30 Under 30''. They are currently an Assistant Professor of Art, Film, and Visual Studies at Harvard University. Greg Miller (born 1967) is an American photographer based in Connecticut. He was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2008. He is known for his use of a large format camera. Biography Miller was born in Nashville, Tennessee in 1967. He started his commercial photography career in 1988. He graduated from the School of Visual Arts in 1990 with a bachelor of fine arts degree in photography.
