Marcus Junius Brutus
Marcus Junius Brutus (; ; 85 BC – 23 October 42 BC), often referred to simply as Brutus, was a Roman politician, orator, and the most famous of the assassins of Julius Caesar. After being adopted by a relative, he used the name Quintus Servilius Caepio Brutus, which was retained as his legal name. Early in his political career, Brutus opposed Pompey, who was responsible for Brutus' father's death. He also was close to Caesar. Brutus eventually came to oppose Caesar and sided with Pompey against Caesar's forces during the ensuing civil war (49–45 BC). Pompey was defeated at the Battle of Pharsalus in 48, after which Brutus surrendered to Caesar, who granted him amnesty. South Devon Railway Dido Class
The eight ''Dido'' class locomotives were broad gauge locomotives operated on the South Devon Railway and Cornwall Railway and associated other adjacent railways. They were designed for goods trains but were also used on passenger trains when required. The locomotives were ordered by Evans, Walker and Gooch who were now contracted to operate the locomotives for both the railways. They were built by Slaughter, Grüning and Company. The locomotives of both railways were operated as a combined fleet by the South Devon Railway after 1 July 1866. On 1 February 1876 the South Devon Railway was amalgamated with the Great Western Railway, the locomotives were given numbers by their new owners but continued to carry their names too. Four similar locomotives were built for the Vale of Neath Railway in 1861. Some of these could be found working on the South Devon lines after the 1876 amalgamation. Texan Schooner Brutus
The Texan schooner ''Brutus'' was one of the four ships of the First Texas Navy (1836–1838) that during the Texas Revolution wreaked havoc on towns along the coast of Mexico, blockaded Mexican ports, and captured ships bound for Mexico with goods and munitions of war. Among them was the British ship ''Eliza Russell'', the capture of which caused a diplomatic incident as Texas was seeking official recognition from the United Kingdom. When ''Brutus'' returned to Galveston to face official sanctions, Mexican ships attacked her and ''Invincible''; both ran aground in Galveston harbor and were battered apart by storms. With the destruction of ''Brutus'', the first Texas Navy ceased to exist. As a private warship At the beginning of the Texas War of Independence, businessmen John and Augustus Allen endeavored to keep the Texans' supply ...
