Bruno Grimschitz
Bruno Grimschitz (23 April 1892 – 13 June 1964) was an Austrian art historian and museum director who belonged to the Nazi Party. Education Grimschitz was born in Moosburg in Carinthia. He studied art history from 1910 at the University of Vienna under Max Dvořák and attended the Institute for Austrian Historical Research. During his studies he became a member of the student association ''Landsmannschaft'' Kärnten Wien in 1912. From 1914 to 1918 he took part in the First World War as a frontline officer. In 1918 he completed his studies with a dissertation on the subject of the artistic development of the architect Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt. He began his professional activity in 1919 as a research assistant at the Österreichische Galerie Belvedere (Belvedere Gallery) in Vienna, where he became curator in 1928. Degenerate art (german: Entartete Kunst was a term adopted in the 1920s by the Nazi Party in Germany to describe modern art. During the dictatorship of Adolf Hitler, German modernist art, including many works of internationally renowned artists, was removed from state-owned museums and banned in Nazi Germany on the grounds that such art was an "insult to German feeling", un-German, Freemasonic, Jewish, or Communist in nature. Those identified as degenerate artists were subjected to sanctions that included being dismissed from teaching positions, being forbidden to exhibit or to sell their art, and in some cases being forbidden to produce art. Austrian Nazism or Austrian National Socialism was a pan-German movement that was formed at the beginning of the 20th century. The Vugesta (also VUGESTAP) for “''Vermögens-Umzugsgut von der Gestapo''" ("Property Removed by the Gestapo") was a Nazi looting organization in Vienna that from 1940 to 1945 seized the possessions of 5,000-6,000 Viennese Jews. It was a key player in the aryanization of Jewish property, redistributing private property stolen from Jewish Austrians to non-Jewish or Aryan Austrians during the Nazi reign in Austria. Creation On August 22, 1940, the Reich Minister of Justice issued a decree to the ''Reichsverkehrsgruppe Spedition und Lagerei'' (Reich Transport Group Forwarding and Storage). Aryanization (german: Arisierung) was the Nazi term for the seizure of property from Jews and its transfer to non-Jews, and the forced expulsion of Jews from economic life in Nazi Germany, Axis-aligned states, and their occupied territories. It entailed the transfer of Jewish property into " Aryan" or non-Jewish, hands.
