Bruce Starkey
Bruce Starkey (born 18 November 1953) is an Australian former rugby league footballer who played who played in Sydney's NSWRFL competition in the 1970s and 1980s. Career A St. George junior from the Arncliffe Scots Club, Starkey went on to become a dual premiership winner with the St George Dragons. He was a powerful member of the St George forward pack in the victorious 1977 Grand Final and 1979 Grand Final teams that were coached by the legendary Harry Bath. He also played in the drawn 1977 Grand Final draw. 1979 NSWRFL Season
The 1979 NSWRFL season was the 72nd season of Sydney's professional rugby league football competition, Australia's first. Twelve New South Wales Rugby Football League clubs competed for the J.J. Giltinan Shield and WD & HO Wills Cup during the season, which culminated in a grand final between the St. George and Canterbury-Bankstown clubs. NSWRFL teams also competed in the 1979 Amco Cup. Season summary Twenty-two regular season rounds were played from March till August, resulting in a top five of St. George, Parramatta, Cronulla-Sutherland, Western Suburbs and Canterbury-Bankstown who battled it out in the finals. Parramatta's Ray Price was the 1979 season's Rothmans Medallist, and also won ''Rugby League Week''’s player of the year award. Harry Bath (28 November 1924 – 4 October 2008), born Alfred Henry Bath, also known by the nickname of "The Old Fox", was an Australian rugby league footballer and coach who was prominent and influential in the mid-20th century. A state and international representative who played 12 matches for Other Nationalities in the International Championship from 1949 to 1955, he played as a and has been referred to as the best Australian rugby league player never to be picked for the Australian national team. Twelve clubs, including six of 1908's foundation teams and another six from around Sydney competed for the J. J. Season summary During the pre-season Parramatta forward Graham Olling made headlines when he became the first rugby league player to admit to taking anabolic steroids, which at the time were not illegal in the sport.
