Bruce Reid Sr.
Bruce Reid Sr. (27 April 1929 – 24 August 1955) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Western Bulldogs, Footscray in the Australian Football League, Victorian Football League (VFL). Reid, a Romsey Football Club, Romsey recruit, played 17 of a possible 19 games in the 1949 VFL season. He added another eight games the following year but appeared just three times in 1951, his final season. He was the father of Bruce Reid Jr. and John Reid (Australian footballer), John Reid, who both would also play for Footscray. He died in August 1955, 4 months before Bruce junior was born. Western Bulldogs
The Western Bulldogs are a professional Australian rules football team that competes in the Australian Football League (AFL), the sport's premier competition. Founded in 1877 as the Footscray Football Club, and based in West Footscray in the old City of Footscray west of Melbourne, the club won nine premierships in the Victorian Football Association (VFA) before gaining admission to the Victorian Football League (which became the AFL in 1990) in 1925. The Australian Football League (AFL) is the only fully professional competition of Australian rules football. Through the AFL Commission, the AFL also serves as the sport's governing body and is responsible for controlling the laws of the game. 1949 VFL Season
The 1949 VFL season was the 53rd season of the Victorian Football League (VFL), the highest level senior Australian rules football competition in Victoria. The season featured twelve clubs, ran from 16 April until 24 September, and comprised a 19-game home-and-away season followed by a finals series featuring the top four clubs. The premiership was won by the Essendon Football Club for the ninth time, after it defeated by 73 points in the 1949 VFL Grand Final. Premiership season In 1949, the VFL competition consisted of twelve teams of 18 on-the-field players each, plus two substitute players, known as the 19th man and the 20th man. A player could be substituted for any reason; however, once substituted, a player could not return to the field of play under any circumstances. John Reid (Australian Footballer)
John Reid (born 25 February 1953) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Melbourne, Footscray and the Sydney Swans in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Reid had a slow start to his career, after appearing just once in the 1972 VFL season, he did not play a senior game in 1973 and was used just twice in 1974. In 1975 he moved to Footscray, the club that his father Bruce Reid senior had played for. A defender, he played just one game in each of his first two seasons. At the age of 24 he finally put together a sequence of appearances when he played in all but one fixture from round 10 of the 1977 season. He was joined at Footscray by his brother, Bruce Reid junior, in 1977. For the next four years he was a regular member of the side. Reid joined the Sydney Swans in 1982, for their first league season after relocating.
