Bruce McLaughlin
Bruce McLaughlin (born January 15, 1946) is a Canadian politician. He served as a Member of the Northwest Territories Legislature from 1979 until 1991. McLaughlin was first elected to the Northwest Territories Legislature in the 1979 Northwest Territories general election. He won the new Pine Point electoral district. McLaughlin was re-elected in the 1983 Northwest Territories general election. In his second term he was appointed to the cabinet and became Minister of Health and Social Services. He was re-elected to his third and final term in the 1987 Northwest Territories general election. His electoral district was abolished in 1991 after the Pine Point mine shutdown operations and the town was dismantled. McLaughlin ran as the candidate in the electoral district of Western Arctic for the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada in the 2000 Canadian federal election. The Progressive Conservative Party of Canada (PC; french: Parti progressiste-conservateur du Canada) was a centre-right federal political party in Canada that existed from 1942 to 2003. From Canadian Confederation in 1867 until 1942, the original Conservative Party of Canada participated in numerous governments and had multiple names. In 1942, its name was changed to the Progressive Conservative Party under the request of Manitoba Progressive Premier John Bracken. In the 1957 federal election, John Diefenbaker carried the Tories to their first victory in 27 years. Western Arctic
Northwest Territories (french: Territoires du Nord-Ouest) is a federal electoral district represented in the House of Commons of Canada. The electoral district covers the entire territory. This riding was created in 1962 from Mackenzie River riding. It was composed of the entire territory of the Northwest Territories. In 1979, the riding was divided into the ridings of Western Arctic and Nunatsiaq (later Nunavut). Following the creation of the territory of Nunavut in 1999, the riding of Western Arctic was made coterminous with the new Northwest Territories. After 1999, Western Arctic was an anomaly in that, unlike Nunavut and Yukon, it did not share the name of the territory with which it was coterminous. The 1983 Northwest Territories general election was held on November 21, 1983. This was the first election in the Northwest Territories with live television coverage of vote returns. Yellowknife
Yellowknife (; Dogrib: ) is the capital, largest community, and only city in the Northwest Territories, Canada. It is on the northern shore of Great Slave Lake, about south of the Arctic Circle, on the west side of Yellowknife Bay near the outlet of the Yellowknife River.
