Linebacker (LB) is a playing position in gridiron football. Linebackers are members of the defensive team, and line up three to five yards behind the line of scrimmage and the defensive linemen. They are the "middle ground" of defenders, playing closer to the line of scrimmage than the defensive backs (secondary), but farther back than the defensive linemen. As such, linebackers play a hybrid role and are often the most versatile players on the defensive side of the ball; they can be asked to play roles similar to either a defensive lineman (such as stopping the runner on a running play) or a defensive back (such as dropping back into pass coverage). Concussions and play-related head blows in American football have been shown to be the cause of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), which has led to player deaths and other debilitating symptoms after retirement, including memory loss, depression, anxiety, headaches, stress, and sleep disturbances. The list of ex-NFL players that have either been diagnosed ''post-mortem'' with CTE or have reported symptoms of CTE continues to grow. According to Boston University, CTE is a brain degenerative disease found in athletes, military veterans, and others with history of repetitive brain trauma. Raymond Demont Austin (born December 21, 1974) is a former American football defensive back in the National Football League. He played college football at Tennessee and was drafted by the New York Jets in the fifth round of the 1997 NFL Draft. He also played for the Chicago Bears in the NFL and the Chicago Enforcers of the XFL. In 2017 he started the Fan Controlled Sports League and is currently the league Commissioner.
