Brownwood Bulletin
The ''Brownwood Bulletin'' is a daily newspaper based in Brownwood, Texas, United States. History Brownwood attorney William Harding Mayes purchased the weeklies ''Brownwood Bulletin'' in the 1886 and ''Brownwood Banner'' in the 1887, consolidating them into the ''Brownwood Banner-Bulletin''. His brother H.F. Mayes and he started the daily ''Brownwood Daily Bulletin'' on October 15, 1900. He published the newspaper until 1914. H.F. Mayes and J.C. White bought the newspaper operation in 1919 and operated it until 1940, when C.C. Woodson bought the daily ''Bulletin''. In 1933, The weekly ''Banner-Bulletin'' and its commercial printing division were sold to Mayes' son, Wendell W. Mayes, and partner John W. Blake, who renamed it the ''Brownwood Banner''; the company was later sold to Clark Coursey. The papers merged in the 1950s. Brownwood is a city in and the county seat of Brown County, Texas, United States. The population was 18,862 at th2020 census Brownwood is located in the Northern Texas Hill Country and is home to Howard Payne University that was founded in 1889. History The original site of the Brown County seat of Brownwood was east of Pecan Bayou. A dispute arose over land and water rights, and the settlers were forced to find a new location. Greenleaf Fisk donated to relocate the county seat to the west side of the bayou, on what is now the current site of Brownwood, and 100 additional acres for county use. The town was incorporated in 1884. During the Second World War, Brownwood was the location of U.S. Army Camp Bowie, which had a peak complement of over 80,000 soldiers. William Harding Mayes
William Harding Mayes (May 20, 1861 – June 26, 1939) was Lieutenant Governor of the U.S. state of Texas (1913–1914), a newspaperman who published the '' Brownwood Bulletin'' and founder of the University of Texas journalism school. Early life Born in Mayfield, Kentucky, Mayes was educated at Norton's English and Classical School in Tennessee, Paducah District Methodist College in Kentucky and Vanderbilt University, class of 1881, where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta. He practiced law in Kentucky in 1881 as a partner in the law firm Park and Mayes and in Texas from 1882 to 1886, serving as county attorney of Brown County, Texas from 1882 to 1883. He received an honorary doctorate of laws from Daniel Baker College in 1914.
