Broughton High School, Edinburgh
Broughton High School is a secondary school located in the north of Edinburgh, Scotland. In 2009, the building at Inverleith was replaced with a building funded by a public–private partnership. The school is currently situated next to Inverleith Park, in the Stockbridge neighbourhood of Edinburgh but was formerly in Broughton, where the poet Hugh MacDiarmid was a pupil. Description The school was recently named in Tatlers list of top state schools. The school is home to a specialised music department: the City of Edinburgh Music School which nearly faced closure in 2018. Along with the music school Broughton has a specialist dance department. Broughton is also one of seven schools in Scotland chosen by the Scottish Football Association to support talented young footballers with extra coaching. The City of Edinburgh Council is the local government authority for the city of Edinburgh, capital of Scotland. Alan Bold
Alan Norman Bold (1943–1998) was a Scottish poet, biographer, journalist and saxophonist. He was born in Edinburgh. He edited Hugh MacDiarmid's ''Letters'' and wrote the influential biography ''MacDiarmid''. Bold had acquainted himself with MacDiarmid in 1963 while still an English Literature student at Edinburgh University. His debut work, ''Society Inebrious'', with a lengthy introduction by MacDiarmid, was published in 1965, during Bold's final university year. This early publication kick-started a prolific poetic career with Bold publishing another three books of verse before the end of the decade, including the ambitious book-length poem ''The State of the Nation''. Tommy Smith (saxophonist)
Thomas William Ellis Smith is a Scottish jazz saxophonist, composer, and educator. Early life Smith was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, to Scottish parents Brenda Ann Urquhart, and father, William John Ellis, whom he never met. Smith was brought up in the Wester Hailes area of the city, where he was encouraged by his stepfather, George Smith, an avid jazz fan and drummer in the Gene Krupa style, to take up the tenor saxophone at the age of twelve. When he was thirteen he attended a weekly jazz workshop under the direction of Gordon Cruikshank. He met pathologist and pianist Vincenzo Crucioli, who became a mentor. With drummer John Rae, his first group won Edinburgh International Jazz Festival Best Group award in 1981. At fourteen Smith won 'Best Soloist'. Angus Struan Carolus Robertson (born 28 September 1969) is a Scottish politician serving as the Cabinet Secretary for the Constitution, External Affairs and Culture since 2021. Former Depute Leader of the Scottish National Party (SNP) from 2016 to 2018, he has served as the Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) for Edinburgh Central since 2021. David Murray (Scottish Businessman)
Sir David Edward Murray (born 14 October 1951) is a Scottish entrepreneur, businessman and former chairman of the Rangers Football Club. Born in Ayr, Scotland, Murray had formed the company Murray International Metals Limited by the age of 23. The company grew to include steel distribution, mining and property development. Murray is perhaps best known for his ownership of Scottish football club Rangers F.C., which he purchased for £6 million in 1988. While owner, the club won 15 League Championships and 20 Cups. Sean McKirdy (born 12 April 1998) is a Scottish footballer who last played as a midfielder for Lowland League club Kelty Hearts. Career McKirdy began his career as a youth player at Hutchison Vale. After signing professional terms with Hearts he made his debut on 20 August 2014, in the second round of the Scottish Challenge Cup away to Livingston, replacing Angus Beith in the 85th minute of a 4–1 loss. Garbage is an American rock band formed in 1993 in Madison, Wisconsin. Mary Fee
Mary Christina Fee (born 23 March 1954) is a Scottish politician who was a Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) for the West Scotland region from 2011 to 2021. A member of the Scottish Labour Party, she was its deputy spokesperson for a number of portfolios from 2017 to 2019. Early life and career Fee was born in Edinburgh on 23 March 1954. Martyn Bennett
Martyn Bennett (17 February 1971 – 30 January 2005) was a Canadian-Scottish musician who was influential in the evolution of modern Celtic fusion, a blending of traditional Celtic and modern music. He was a piper, violinist, composer and producer. He was an innovator and his compositions crossed musical and cultural divides. Sporting dreadlocks at the height of his performing career, his energetic displays led to descriptions such as "the techno piper".
