Brooks County High School is a high school serving Quitman, Georgia, United States. It won several Georgia Interscholastic Association state football championships. The school offers community service clubs, technology and career clubs, and honors and special interest clubs. Sports include football, basketball, volleyball, softball, cheerleading, tennis, baseball, golf, wrestling, soccer, and track. The school is located at 1801 Moultrie Highway. Quitman, Georgia
Quitman is a city in and the county seat of Brooks County, Georgia, United States. The population was 3,850 at the 2010 census. The Quitman Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Quitman was a home of James Pierpont, author of the song "Jingle Bells" (1857), and uncle of American financier J.P. Morgan. Pierpont was organist for the First Presbyterian Church. A local Quitman ordinance prohibits chickens from crossing the road. It is called the "Camellia City", as the tree grows in profusion around the area. History Quitman was designated county seat of newly formed Brooks County in 1858. It was incorporated as a town in 1859 and as a city in 1904. As the county seat, it was the center of trading in the county, which was devoted to cotton plantations before and after the American Civil War. The community was named for John A. Georgia Interscholastic Association
The Georgia Interscholastic Association (GIA), formed in 1948, was a sports league of high schools serving African Americans in Georgia. It merged into the Georgia High School Association with desegregation in 1970. '' As If We Were Ghosts'' is a documentary film made about the league and its athletes. The Georgia Interscholastic Association held state championship competitions from 1948–70 and joined the Georgia High School Association the following year. History The Big 7 Conference included large high schools for African American students in Georgia. The GIA was an expansion of this league that grew to include county high schools around the state. Kendra Norman-Bellamy
Kendra Norman (born December 17, 1966) is an African-American writer of Christian fiction and non-fiction Christian literature. Her novels are known and widely applauded for their positive male lead characters and their combined romantic and suspenseful story lines. Biography Kendra Norman is a native of West Palm Beach, Florida, but spent most of her formative years in southern Georgia. She graduated from Brooks County High School in Quitman, Georgia. Kendra and her husband, Michael Holmes, share a blended family of two daughters and one son. Her first husband, Jimmy (whose last name was also Holmes - no relation to Michael) died. Marcus Stroud
Marcus LaVar Stroud (born June 25, 1978) is an American former professional football player who was a defensive tackle for 10 seasons in the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the Georgia Bulldogs, and was selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars with the 13th overall pick in the 2001 NFL Draft. He was a member of the NFL's Buffalo Bills and New England Patriots. Early years Stroud won a state title with Brooks County High School in 1994. He appeared on the cover of ''Sports Illustrated'' in 1996 while still in high school which featured a cover story of National Signing Day. Stroud, at the time a 6'6" 266-pound defensive end, originally gave Florida a verbal commitment but changed his mind after Bulldogs coach Ray Goff was fired in November 1995. Lawrence Virgil
Lawrence Virgil (born January 20, 1991) is a former American football defensive tackle. He played college football at Valdosta State University and attended Brooks County High School in Quitman, Georgia. He used to be a member of the New Orleans Saints of the National Football League (NFL). Virgil’s NFL career ended due to the tearing of his ACL, MCL, and meniscus in his left knee. Early years Virgil played high school football for the Brooks County High School Trojans. He helped the Trojans to a 9-3 record and the round of 16 of the Georgia AA state tournament. During his college career, Virgil played for the Valdosta State Blazers from 2010 to 2013. Professional career Virgil signed with the New Orleans Saints of the NFL on May 12, 2014 after going undrafted in the 2014 NFL Draft.
