Brookhattan
Brookhattan was an American soccer club based in New York City that was a member of the professional American Soccer League (ASL). Formed in 1933, they joined the American Soccer League and won the first half of the league's 1933 season. Following that league's collapse they joined an identically named league in late 1933. In 1942 they won the Lewis Cup, and in 1945 the ASL, National Challenge Cup and Lewis Cup. In 1948, coffee importer Eugene Diaz, previous owner of New York Galicia, bought the team. In that year they finished second in the 1948 National Challenge Cup. During the 1948-49 season, Pito Villanon led the ASL in scoring. Joe Gaetjens
Joseph Edouard Gaetjens ( ; , 1924 – , 1964 resumed was a soccer player who played as a center forward. Born in Haiti, he also played one match for Haiti in a World Cup qualifier against Mexico before switching to represent the United States national team in the 1950 FIFA World Cup, scoring the winning goal in the 1–0 upset of England. Gaetjens won his home national championship in 1942 and 1944 with top-level Etoile Haïtienne. He then moved to the American Soccer League (ASL) and led all players with 18 goals in 15 games for New York's Brookhattan during the 1949–50 season. He was posthumously inducted into the United States National Soccer Hall of Fame in 1976. 1948 National Challenge Cup ...
The 1948 National Challenge Cup was the 35th edition of the United States open soccer championship. The tournament had many delays due to weather in the eastern division and by the time Brookhattan had won the eastern final it had to put off playing the national final to entertain touring Liverpool F.C. The championship game was further put off when a number of Simpkins players had US Olympic commitments. When the final was played it took place on October 17 at St. Louis where the Simpkins defeated Brookhattan 32. American Soccer League (1933–1983)
The American Soccer League has been a name used by four different professional soccer sports leagues in the United States. The second American Soccer League was established in summer 1933 following the collapse of the original American Soccer League, which lasted from 1921 until spring 1933. The new league was created on a smaller scale and with smaller budgets. This league existed until over-expansion and financial limitations led to its collapse in 1983. Pito Villanon
Pito Villanon was a Cuban football player who spent eleven seasons with Brookhattan in the American Soccer League. At the time, he was one of a handful of black professional athletes, playing in an integrated American sports league. He is reputedly the first black player in the American Soccer League. During his eleven seasons in the ASL, Villanon led the league in scoring twice ( 1948-49, 1952-53). He was also the 1952-53 ASL MVP. League standings Championship playoff series Since three teams finished the season with the same point totals, a two-match, championship playoff was held. Brooklyn Hispano hosted New York Americans in the first match. The winner of that play-in contest earned the right to face Philadelphia Nationals two weeks later.
