Brookdale Handicap
The Brookdale Handicap was an American Thoroughbred horse race run annually in mid summer from 1887 through 1910 at Gravesend Race Track in Brooklyn, New York and from 1914 through 1933 at Aqueduct Racetrack in Queens. Open to horses age three and older, it was contested on dirt over a distance of one mile, one furlong. Gravesend Race Track opened on August 26, 1886 and the first Brookdale Handicap would be run during the following Spring/Summer racing season. On May 26, 1887, the inaugural running of the Brookdale Handicap was won by future Hall of Fame inductee, Hanover, ridden by Jim McLaughlin and trained by Frank McCabe both of whom would also be inducted in racing's Hall of Fame. Gravesend Race Track
Gravesend Race Track at Gravesend in Brooklyn, New York was a Thoroughbred horse racing facility that opened in 1886 and closed in 1910. The track was built by the Brooklyn Jockey Club with the backing of Philip and Michael Dwyer, two wealthy racing stable owners known as the Dwyer Brothers. Philip, the controlling shareholder of the Brooklyn Jockey Club, served as its president. Gravesend Race Track hosted the Preakness Stakes for fifteen years. Inspector B was an American Thoroughbred racehorse best known for winning the 1886 Belmont Stakes. Background Inspector B was bred at Belle Meade Stud in Tennessee by William Giles Harding. His sire was Enquirer, and his dam was Colossa. He was previously registered as Envoleur, but his name was later changed to Inspector B. He was named after the head of the New York City Police Department detective department, Thomas F. Byrnes. He was later sold to the Dwyer Brothers, Philip J. Dwyer and Michael F. Dwyer. Racing career As a two-year-old, Inspector B came second in the August Stakes, the Champagne Stakes, and the Great Eastern Handicap. Jean Bereaud (1896 – November 15, 1908) was an American Thoroughbred Champion racehorse best known for winning an 1899 American Classic Race, the Belmont Stakes. Background He was bred by the partnership of David Gideon and John Daly at their Holmdel Stock Farm in Holmdel, New Jersey. His sire was His Highness who in 1891 became the first horse in American Thoroughbred racing history to win more than $100,000 in a single season. He was out of the mare Carrie C., who was described by ''The New York Times'' as "one of the best of the high-class platers of her day." Hermis (foaled 1899 in Kentucky) was an American Thoroughbred horse racing, racehorse. Background Hermis was a chestnut horse bred by Hiram Berry: H. A. Engman owned his dam, Katy of the West. He was purchased as a two-year-old by Cincinnati theatre man Henry M. Ziegler and was trained by Charles Hughes. Hermis would be sold to Louis V. Joe Madden (horse)
Joseph John Maddon (born February 8, 1954) is an American former professional baseball manager and coach. He has managed the Tampa Bay Rays, Chicago Cubs, and Los Angeles Angels of Major League Baseball. Maddon began his coaching career in MLB with the Angels in 1994 and served under managers Buck Rodgers, Marcel Lachemann, John McNamara, Terry Collins, and Mike Scioscia. He served two stints as interim manager during this time. He managed the Rays from 2006 through 2014, winning the 2008 American League pennant. Traditionally they are rendered through etching, line engraving, or lithograph and then colored by hand. Exterminator (May 30, 1915 – September 26, 1945) was an American Thoroughbred Hall of Fame racehorse, the winner of the 1918 Kentucky Derby and in 1922 Horse of the Year honors. Background The lanky chestnut colt was bred by F. D. "Dixie" Knight (Mrs. M.J. Mizner, Knight's mother, was said to be the actual breeder) and foaled at Almahurst Farm near Lexington, Kentucky. Exterminator was sired by McGee, who also produced Donerail, the winner of the 1913 Kentucky Derby. At the Saratoga Paddock sale of 1916, he was bought as a yearling for $1,500 by J. Cal Milam who trained his own horses. The big colt grew fast, reaching at two but he was awkward and coarse looking. For this reason, Milam had him gelded.
