A bestselling novelist in the 1920s, he reinvented himself as a farmer in the late 1930s and became one of the earliest proponents of sustainable and organic agriculture in the United States. 	William Arnold Bromfield William Arnold Bromfield (1801–1851), was an English botanist. Bromfield was born at Boldre, in the New Forest, Hampshire, in 1801, his father, the Rev. John Arnold Bromfield, dying in the same year. He received his early training under Dr. Knox of Tunbridge, Dr. Nicholas of Baling, and Rev. Mr. Phipps, a Warwickshire clergyman. He entered Glasgow University in 1821, and two years later he took his degree in medicine. During his university career he first showed a liking for botany, and made an excursion into the Scottish highlands in quest of plants. He left Scotland in 1826, and, being independent of professional earnings, travelled through Germany, Italy, and France, returning to England in 1830. 	William Bromfield William Bromfield (24 January 1868 – 3 June 1950) was an English trade unionist and Labour Party politician from Leek in Staffordshire. He was the town's Member of Parliament (MP) for all but four of the years between 1918 and 1945. Bromfield came to prominence in the local trade union movement in the early 1900s. William Stubbs had been the leader of almost all the many small unions of silk workers in the town, but he was ageing, and by 1907, Bromfield had taken over from him as secretary of the Amalgamated Society of Winders, Fillers and Braid Makers, the Amalgamated Society of Silk Spinners and Throwsters, the Amalgamated Society of Female Silk Operatives, and the Leek Amalgamated Society of Silk and Cotton Dyers. 	Robert Bromfield Robert Bromfield (died 1647) was an English timber merchant and politician who sat in the House of Commons between 1621 and 1624. Bromfield was described as a "woodmonger", in the diary of Philip Henslowe, of whose will he was one of the overseers in 1616. He leased a wharf in Southwark from 1601. In 1621, Bromfield was elected Member of Parliament for Southwark. In the same year, he obtained a mortgage of Hammonds Place, Clayton Sussex, which by 1666 was in the hands of Sir Edward Bromfield, 2nd Baronet. He was re-elected MP for Southwark in 1624. In 1625 Bromfield and Thomas Overman bought Montague House and Montague Close, including various wharves and buildings around Southwark Priory, from Anthony-Maria Browne, 2nd Viscount Montagu; Bromfield redeveloped the site to make the buildings "suitable for men of better ability".
