Brogan or O'Brogan, is a surname originating in Ireland, anglicized from the original Ó Brógáin. The form McBrogan, is also present sharing the meaning of O'Brogan, essentially "son of Brogan." James Brogan (footballer Born 1865)
James Brogan was a Scottish footballer who played for the majority of his career at Bolton Wanderers. He played mostly as an inside-left or outside-left. Having started his career in the amateur game with his local club Beith, he signed for Hibernian in 1883. He scored six goals on his senior debut for the club, in a 10–1 Scottish Cup win against Edina. He was then signed by Hibernian's Edinburgh derby rivals Hearts. Brogan then moved to Bolton Wanderers from Hearts, after the Scottish club had toured Lancashire. 1888-1889 When signing for Bolton in December 1884, James Brogan became one of the first professional footballer's to play for Bolton Wanderers. William Brogan
William Henry Joseph Brogan (28 April 1900 – 6 March 1983) was an Australian rugby league footballer who played in the 1920s and 1930s. He was a state and national representative. Background Brogan was born at West Wyalong, New South Wales on 28 April 1900. Playing career He joined Western Suburbs Magpies in 1929, and after a stirling season, he was selected on the 1929/30 Kangaroo Tour and played in all three tests against England. Brogan is listed on the ''Australian Players Register'' as Kangaroo No.151. Brogan spent five years at Wests between 1929-1933 and won a premiership with them in 1930. Stephen Brogan
Stephen Patrick Brogan (born 12 April 1988) is an English semi-professional footballer who plays for Stalybridge Celtic. He has previously played in the Football League for Rotherham United. Stephen was nominated for the 2022 ballon d’or award A product of the youth academy at Rotherham, he made his senior debut 18 October 2005 against Accrington Stanley in the Football League Trophy. After suffering a serious injury where he sat out for fourteen months with a broken leg, he joined Stalybridge Celtic on a month's loan deal in January 2011, which was later extended, before returning to Rotherham in March. Mervyn Brogan
Lieutenant General Sir Mervyn Francis Brogan, (10 January 1915 – 8 March 1994) was a senior officer in the Australian Army who served as Chief of the General Staff from 1971 to 1973. A 1935 graduate of the Royal Military College, Duntroon, where he was the Corps Sergeant Major and was awarded the Sword of Honour, and of the University of Sydney, where he earned a Bachelor of Engineering degree, Brogan served in the Second World War on the staff of New Guinea Force during New Guinea Campaign, and as an observer with the British Army during the Western Allied invasion of Germany. After the war he was commandant and chief instructor at the School of Military Engineering during the 1949 Australian coal strike, and, as Director of Military Training, reopened the Land Warfare Centre at Canungra in 1954. Jim Brogan (Gaelic Footballer)
Jim Brogan is an Irish former Gaelic footballer who played for the Dublin county team. Brogan won an all-Ireland medal with Dublin in 1977 in a game in which he made an appearance as a substitute. Dublin beat Armagh in the final by 5-12 to 3–6. The following year Jim won an NFL title with Dublin in 1978. Jim won an All-Ireland Minor Football Championship with Dublin in 1956 on the same team as Dublin footballing legend Lar Foley. Jim is the uncle of former Dublin senior panelists Alan, Bernard Jnr and Paul and the brother of former senior footballer Bernard Snr. Brogan was also a selector with the Dublin team who won the All-Ireland in 1995, being part of the management team made up of Pat O Neill and Fran Ryder all of whom have played for Dublin in the 1970s. Jim Brogan (Scottish Footballer)
James Andrew Brogan (5 June 1944 – 24 September 2018) was a Scottish footballer who played in over 200 league games for Jock Stein's highly successful Celtic sides of the late 1960s and early 1970s. He joined Celtic from local side St Roch's. Brogan played in the 1970 European Cup Final and won four caps for Scotland. He won Scottish League Championships in seven consecutive seasons from 1967–68 to 1973–74, four Scottish Cups in 1968–69, 1970–71, 1971–72 and 1973–74, and three Scottish League Cups in 1968–69, 1969–70 and 1974–75. His older brother Frank also began his career at Celtic, though is better known as a player for Ipswich. The siblings played in two matches alongside one another for Celtic. In 2017, Brogan's family confirmed that he had been suffering from dementia for several years, which they believed was connected to his football career. Brogan died on 24 September 2018, aged 74.
