Brodhead Farm
Broadhead Farm, also known as the Broadhead-Heller Farm and/or "Wheat Plains," is a historic home located in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area at Lehman Township, Pike County, Pennsylvania. It was established in the late 1770's by Garret Broadhead (1733-1804), a soldier of the American Revolution. The main structure is a large -story, clapboard sided dwelling. It has a slate covered gable roof with dormers. The oldest section is of log construction and it was added on numerous times over the succeeding years. Communities Lehman Township is home to several communities. The unincorporated community of Bushkill was a well-known small town in the region but has since fallen on hard times. Lehman Township is also home to Pine Ridge, Pocono Mountain Lake Estates, Pocono Ranchlands and Saw Creek, four private communities. Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area is a national recreation area administered by the National Park Service in northwest New Jersey and northeast Pennsylvania. It is centered around a stretch of the Delaware River designated the Middle Delaware National Scenic River. Slate
Slate is a fine-grained, foliated, homogeneous metamorphic rock derived from an original shale-type sedimentary rock composed of clay or volcanic ash through low-grade regional metamorphism. It is the finest grained foliated metamorphic rock. Foliation may not correspond to the original sedimentary layering, but instead is in planes perpendicular to the direction of metamorphic compression. The foliation in slate is called "slaty cleavage". It is caused by strong compression causing fine grained clay flakes to regrow in planes perpendicular to the compression. When expertly "cut" by striking parallel to the foliation, with a specialized tool in the quarry, many slates will display a property called fissility, forming smooth flat sheets of stone which have long been used for roofing, floor tiles, and other purposes.
