Broadway Historic District is a national historic district located at Lancaster in Erie County, New York. The district encompasses 85 contributing resources in the village of Lancaster. The district includes a variety of commercial, residential, religious and institutional buildings built between about 1831 and 1940. It includes notable examples of Greek Revival, Italianate, Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, and Bungalow / American Craftsman style architecture. Located in the district are the separately listed Lancaster Municipal Building (1940), Miller-Mackey House (c. 1900), Clark-Lester House (ca. 1891), Bruce-Briggs Brick Block (c. 1855), Lancaster Masonic Lodge Hall (1916-1919), Liebler-Rohl Gasoline Station (c. 1935), Dr. John J. Lancaster (village), New York
Lancaster is a village in Erie County, New York, United States. As of the 2010 census, the village population was 10,352. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village of Lancaster is in the west part of the town of Lancaster and is east of Buffalo. The Lancaster Opera House is locally famous for its musicals and stage plays. The current mayor is Lynne T. Ruda. History The Village of Lancaster was incorporated in 1849 from part of the town of Lancaster. Lancaster is the third oldest incorporated village in Erie County, behind Springville and Gowanda. The village is proud of its historic past and emphasizes preservation of its historic buildings. The Italianate style was a distinct 19th-century phase in the history of Classical architecture. Like Palladianism and Neoclassicism, the Italianate style drew its inspiration from the models and architectural vocabulary of 16th-century Italian Renaissance architecture, synthesising these with picturesque aesthetics. Edward Brodhead Green (May 10, 1855 – February 2, 1950), very often referred to as E. B. Green, was a major American architect from New York State. Early life Green was born in Utica, New York on May 10, 1855. He attended Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, graduating with a bachelor of architecture degree in 1878. Following his graduation, Green was the 3rd architect to be registered by the State University of New York. Career After graduation, Green worked as a junior architect with William Miller in Ithaca for three years while teaching at Cornell for one year.
