British Sports Book Award
The Sports Book Awards (previously National Sporting Club Book Awards then Telegraph Sports Book Awards) is a British literary award for sports writing. It was first awarded in 2003 as part of the National Sporting Club. Awards are presented in multiple categories. Each category is judged by one of: sports writers and broadcasters, retailers and enthusiasts. The winners from each category are then opened to public vote through a website to choose an overall winner. The other major sports writing award in Britain is the William Hill Sports Book of the Year. The award was founded by David H. Willis. Sponsors The awards' original sponsors included Ladbrokes, Virgin Publishing, Butler and Tanner and WH Smith. As of 2015, new sponsors included Cross Pens, Sky Sports, The Times, Littlehampton Book Services, Robert Walters, TalkSPORT, Freshtime, Human Race Group, Arbuthnot Latham and Procorre. National Sporting Club
The National Sporting Club was a club founded in London in 1891, which did more to establish the sport of boxing in Great Britain than any other organisation. Origins The club was founded on 5 March 1891 as a private club. Its premises were at 43 King Street, Covent Garden, London. The founders were John Fleming and A.F. "Peggy" Bettinson, and Hugh Lowther, 5th Earl of Lonsdale was its first president. The club was run under very strict rules regarding both the boxers and the members. Bouts would take place after dinner, before about 1,300 members and guests. The bouts would be fought in silence as no talking was permitted during the rounds. The club built up a great tradition of sportsmanship and fair play. In 1909, the club's president introduced the Lonsdale Belt as a prize to be awarded to the British champion at each weight. David Walsh (journalist)
David Joseph Walsh (born 17 June 1955) is an Irish sports journalist and chief sports writer for the British newspaper ''The Sunday Times''. He is a four-time Irish Sportswriter of the Year and a three-time UK Sportswriter of the Year. Walsh was the key journalist in uncovering the doping program by Lance Armstrong and the US Postal Service Cycling Team, leading to a lifetime ban from cycling for Armstrong and being stripped of his seven Tour titles. Career Walsh began his career as a cub reporter on the ''Leitrim Observer'', where he worked his way up to become editor at 25. He left the paper to join the Dublin-based daily the ''Irish Press''. In 1984, he took a year out to cover cycling in Paris. Andre Kirk Agassi ( ; born April 29, 1970) is an American former world No. 1 tennis player. He is an eight-time major champion and an Olympic gold medalist, as well as a runner-up in seven other majors. Paul Canoville
Paul Kenneth Canoville (born 4 March 1962) is an English former professional footballer who played as a winger. He was signed by Chelsea from Hillingdon Borough in 1981, and went on to win the Second Division title with the club in 1983–84. He was the first black player to play for Chelsea, and received a negative reception from racist elements amongst Chelsea supporters. He was sold to Reading for £60,000 in August 1986, before retiring from the professional game due to a serious knee injury the following year. He later had spells with non-league clubs Enfield, Maidenhead United, Northwood, and Egham Town. After retiring he beat crack cocaine addiction and cancer, and penned an award-winning autobiography in 2008. Bobby Charlton
Sir Robert Charlton (born 11 October 1937) is an English former footballer who played either as a midfielder or a forward. Considered one of the greatest players of all time, he was a member of the England team that won the 1966 FIFA World Cup, the year he also won the Ballon d'Or. He finished second in the Ballon d'Or in 1967 and 1968. Paul McGrath (born 4 December 1959) is an Irish former professional footballer, who played as a defender. Mainly a centre back, he also played as defensive midfielder. McGrath is widely considered to be one of the greatest Irish players of all time. He spent the majority of his career at Aston Villa and Manchester United (seven seasons apiece). Andrew John Woodman (born 11 August 1971) is an English football manager and former player, who played as a goalkeeper. He is currently manager of Vanarama National League club Bromley. Gareth Southgate
Gareth Southgate (born 3 September 1970) is an English professional football manager and former player who played as a defender and midfielder.
