British Scholar
Britain and the World (BATW) is a scholarly society focusing on Britain's role in the world from the sixteenth century to the present. It publishes a biannual academic journal published by Edinburgh University Press entitled ''Britain and the World: Historical Journal of The British Scholar Society'', as well as a "Britain and the World" book series with Palgrave Macmillan. BATW also organizes a yearly academic conference, which has been held in both US and UK locations. Launched in 2006 under the name "The British Scholar Society," BATW is currently chaired bMartin Farrof Newcastle University. History Of Britain
The British Isles have witnessed intermittent periods of competition and cooperation between the people that occupy the various parts of Great Britain, the Isle of Man, Ireland, the Bailiwick of Guernsey, the Bailiwick of Jersey and the smaller adjacent islands. Today, the British Isles contain two sovereign states: the Republic of Ireland and the United Kingdom. There are also three Crown dependencies: Guernsey, Jersey and the Isle of Man. The United Kingdom comprises England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. England and Scotland were separate independent countries until 1603, and then legally separate under one monarch until 1707, when they united as one kingdom. Wales and Northern Ireland were composed of several independent kingdoms with shifting boundaries until the medieval period.
