British Instructional Films
British Instructional Films was a British film production company which operated between 1919 and 1932. The company's name is often abbreviated to BIF. The company released a number of feature films during the late silent and early sound eras, developing a reputation for making First World War films and documentary shorts.Low p.129-132 In 1928, the company constructed Welwyn Studios. The company was later merged into the larger British International Pictures, which took over the running of the facility in Welwyn Garden City. ''Sin'' (Swedish: ''Synd'', German: '' Rausch'') is a 1928 silent film, silent drama film directed by Gustaf Molander and starring Lars Hanson, Elissa Landi and Gina Manès.Gustafsson p.83 It was a co-production (film), co-production between Germany, Sweden and the United Kingdom. ''Tell England'' is a 1931 British drama film directed by Anthony Asquith and Geoffrey Barkas and starring Fay Compton, Tony Bruce and Carl Harbord. It is based on the 1922 novel '' Tell England'' by Ernest Raymond which featured two young men joining the army, and taking part in the fighting at Gallipoli. Both directors had close memories of Gallipoli, as did Fay Compton's brother, Compton Mackenzie. Asquith's father H. H. Asquith had been Prime Minister at the time of the Gallipoli Landings, a fact which drew press attention to the film, while Barkas had personally fought at Suvla Bay in the Gallipoli campaign. In the United States it was released under the alternative title ''The Battle of Gallipoli''. Production The film had originally been intended to be made as a silent film, but was delayed.
