British Columbia Mobility Opportunities Society
British Columbia Mobility Opportunities Society (BCMOS) is a not-for-profit organization that enables people with disabilities in Vancouver, Canada, to explore the outdoors. Activities include hiking and gliding. Activities BCMOS was founded by quadriplegic Sam Sullivan in 1985 to make it possible for people with disabilities to access the outdoors. Activities range from day hikes to challenging treks. Since 1995, the centerpiece of BCMOS programs has been the TrailRider, a specially designed wilderness access vehicle. With one wheel, and "sherpas" back and front, the TrailRider has been likened to a cross between a wheelbarrow and a rickshaw. Yet it has twice summited Kilimanjaro, twice reached Everest Base Camp, and enabled thousands of day trips and family outings. BCMOS runs a seasonal hiking program, offers gliding and makes TrailRiders available for rental, year round. Sam Sullivan
Sam Sullivan (born November 13, 1959) is a Canadian politician who had served as the MLA for Vancouver-False Creek. Previously, he served as the Minister of Communities, Sport and Cultural Development with responsibility for Translink in the short-lived BC Liberal government after the 2017 election, as well as the 38th mayor of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada and has been invested as a member of the Order of Canada. He is currently President of the Global Civic Policy Society and adjunct professor with the UBC School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture. Early life Sam Sullivan was born on November 13, 1959, to East Vancouver residents Lloyd and Ida Sullivan. His father ran Sully's Autoparts on East Hastings Street. History The Disability Foundation was formed by quadriplegic Sam Sullivan as the Reach Disability Foundation in June 1996 to provide services for people with physical disabilities. It was renamed in December 2001 following a legal challenge by a similarly named organization in Ottawa. Sullivan resigned as executive director of the Disability Foundation and its affiliated organizations in 2005 when he was elected Mayor of Vancouver. Following his term of office, he was invited to sit on the board of directors in early 2009. The Disability Foundation board of directors has been chaired since its 1996 inception by Vancouver-based businessman Peter Jefferson. Disabled Sailing Association Of British Columbia
The Disabled Sailing Association of British Columbia (DSA-BC) is a Canadian not-for-profit organization that enables people with disabilities to take part in a sport it promotes as "accessible and inclusive." It is located in Vancouver, BC, and has affiliated branches in Victoria, Chemainus and Kelowna. Programs DSA-BC operates a fleet of eight specially designed Martin 16 sailboats from the Jericho Sailing Centre. These are designed to enable people with all levels of disability to enjoy sailing as a recreation activity or competitive high performance endeavor. People with high-level disabilities, such as quadriplegia, have complete control of the vessel, with many sailing solo. Tetra Society of North America is a not-for-profit organization that provides volunteer engineers across Canada and the US to design and construct custom assistive devices for people with disabilities. History The Tetra Society was founded in 1987 in Vancouver, British Columbia, by quadriplegic Sam Sullivan. It grew to more than 300 volunteers in 45 chapters across North America.
