British Carnatic Choir
The British Carnatic Choir (BCC) is a UK-based Carnatic choir group, the first of its kind in the country. It was launched in 2015 by ShruthiUK, a South Asian arts organisation based in Solihull with the aim of creating and exploring choral singing in the South Indian classical music genre. According to its website, the ensemble includes children, young adults, music enthusiasts, professionals of both asian and non-asian origin from across the UK. ShruthiUK is a Solihull-based non-profit South Asian arts and culture organisation. About the organisation It was established in 2005 by Dr. Chithra Ramakrishnan in Leeds. Sparkhill
Sparkhill is an inner-city area of Birmingham, England, situated between Springfield, Hall Green and Sparkbrook. Historically part of Worcestershire, Sparkhill once existed as a rural area with its main industry being agriculture until the 1880s. History In the Middle Ages, the Sparke family farmed in the area, although it can be posited that Sparkhill takes its name from Spark Brook, a small stream that flows from Moseley to the River Cole in Small Heath. Chitravina N
The chitravina ( sa, चित्रवीणा) (also known as chitra veena, chitraveena, chitra vina, hanumad vina, or mahanataka vina) is a 20 or 21-string fretless lute-style veena in Carnatic music. Around the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it started to be known by another name, Gotuvadyam (often mis-spelt as gottuvadyam, and kottuvadyam etc.), which was bestowed upon it by Sakha Rama Rao from Tiruvidaimarudur, who was responsible for bringing it back to the concert scene. Today it is played mainly in South India, though its origins can be traced back to Bharata's Natya Shastra (200 BCE-200 CE), where it is mentioned as a seven string fretless instrument. Neyveli Santhanagopalan
Neyveli Santhanagopalan (born 1963) is an Indian Carnatic vocalist and teacher. He has learned from masters such as Shri Thanjavur Sankara Iyer, Shri Maharajapuram Santhanam, and Shri TN Seshagopalan. He has distinguished himself with numerous concerts worldwide, and is the recipient of several awards in India and overseas. The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry, rewarding contributions to the arts and sciences, work with charitable and welfare organisations, and public service outside the civil service. Paul Chandrasekharan Sabapathy is a retired British accountant and business manager, of Indian origin, and was Lord Lieutenant of the West Midlands of England, from 2007 until his resignation in September 2015. He was the first non-white Lord Lieutenant in the United Kingdom. He was born in Chennai, India. and was educated at The Lawrence School, Lovedale, graduating in 1957 and Madras Christian College. He migrated to the United Kingdom in 1964, obtained a master's degree from Aston University and acquired British citizenship in 1984. He is a Chartered Management Accountant and Chartered Global Management Accountant, and worked for IMI plc, and as assistant managing director of IMI Titanium before retiring in 1996.
