Brinley Rees
Brinley Roderick Rees (27 December 1919 – 21 October 2004) was a Welsh academic. He wrote extensively on Classics, particularly the study of the Greek language. His early work was devoted to Greek papyri; a later publication was devoted to the life and letters of Pelagius. Life and career Rees was born on 27 December 1919. His father was a winder in the Mynydd (Mountain) colliery in Gorseinon, and Brinley was one of four children including Alwyn D. Rees. Rees was educated at Christ College, Brecon, Wales, and Merton College, Oxford, and after wartime service in the Royal Welch Fusiliers took his first academic position at Cardiff High School for Boys, where he was Assistant Master between 1947 and 1948. Rees then started his long career in higher education. In 1948, he became lecturer in Classics at the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, then senior lecturer in Greek at the University of Manchester from 1956. Brinley Williams
Brinley "Bryn" Williams (3 April 1895 – 5 January 1987) was a Welsh dual-code international rugby wing who played rugby union for Llanelli and rugby league with Batley. At rugby union he won three caps for Wales, and at rugby league he won two caps for Wales, and one cap for Other Nationalities. Rugby career Williams first came to note as a rugby player when he joined first-class Welsh team Llanelli. He had previously played for Bryncaerau, but after the cessation of rugby with the outbreak of World War I, he joined the Royal Welsh Fusiliers and was posted to the front. During his service in the War, he was wounded on three occasions, and came to the notice of his battalion commander Lord Howard de Walden, who after the war named a racehorse, Brynfleet, after him. With the end of the war Williams joined Llanelli, and in 1920 he was awarded his first international cap. Henry Brinley Richards
Henry Brinley Richards (13 November 1817 – 1 May 1885) was a Welsh composer, who also published some works under the pseudonym 'Carl Luini'. Richards was born in Hall Street, Carmarthen, his father being organist at St Peter's Church in the town and an organiser of local musical events. Richards won a prize at the Gwent-Morgannwg Eisteddfod of 1834, held at Cardiff, for his arrangement of the popular folk song, "The Ash Grove". As a result, he received the patronage of the Duke of Newcastle; this enabled him to study at the Royal Academy of Music. After completing his studies, he went to Paris where he became a pupil of Frédéric Chopin. It was in Paris that his first major work, the ''Overture in F Minor'', was performed. He taught piano at the Royal Academy of Music, becoming one of the Academy's directors and instigating its regional system of examinations. Godfrey Malbone Brinley (November 22, 1864 – May 6, 1939) was a tennis player from the United States, born in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. He was a boy when tennis was first introduced to New Jersey and he took to the game quickly. At St. Paul’s boarding school in Concord, New Hampshire, he excelled in tennis and squash. At age 17, Brinley entered the Orange Invitation tournament, where he defeated Howard Taylor in the semi-finals and J.F. Bacon in the finals to win his first top-tier title. In 1883, while studying at Trinity College, he entered the U.S. Championships in Newport and reached the quarterfinals before falling to James Dwight in three sets. In 1884, he bowed out in the second round, defeated by Taylor, but he reached the semifinals of the doubles.
