''Buffy the Vampire Slayer'' is an American television series created by Joss Whedon, which premiered on March 10, 1997. It concluded on May 20, 2003, after seven seasons with 144 episodes in total, plus an unaired pilot episode. The first five seasons aired on The WB, and in 2001, it transferred to UPN for its final two seasons. In the United Kingdom, the entire series aired on Sky1 and BBC Two, and on TV3 (Ireland), TV3 in Ireland. The story line is continued in comic book form in Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Eight, Season 8, Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Nine, Season 9, Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Ten, Season 10, Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Eleven, Season 11, and concluded with Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Twelve, Season 12. ''Buffy the Vampire Slayer'' is an American supernatural fiction, supernatural drama television series created by writer and director Joss Whedon. It is based on the Buffy the Vampire Slayer (film), 1992 film of the same name, also written by Whedon, although the events of the film are not considered Canon (fiction), canon to the series. Whedon served as executive producer and showrunner under his production tag Mutant Enemy Productions. The series premiered on March 10, 1997, on The WB and concluded on May 20, 2003, on UPN. The series narrative follows Buffy Summers (played by Sarah Michelle Gellar), the latest in a line of young women known as "Vampire Slayers", or simply "Slayer (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Slayers".
