Brigitte Sy (born 26 January 1956) is a French actress and filmmaker. Her directorial film debut, '' Les Mains libres'', was released in 2010 to critical acclaim in France. Life and career She is the mother of the actors Louis Garrel and Esther Garrel whom she had with the director Philippe Garrel. In an Arte short film collection about AIDS awareness, she revealed that she has been HIV-positive since 1990, contracted from a partner who previously had a drug addiction. She also addresses the issue in '' Les mains libres'' and '' L'endroit idéal'' where the protagonist, Barbara (played by Ronit Elkabetz), is HIV-positive. She opposes the feminist #MeToo movement (#BalanceTonPorc in France) and signed an anti-metoo letter in Le Monde, on 9 January 2018, arguing that men have the freedom to harass (importuner) women. Philippe Garrel
Philippe Garrel (; born 6 April 1948) is a French director, cinematographer, screenwriter, film editor, and producer, associated with the French New Wave movement. His films have won him awards at Cannes Film Festival and Venice Film Festival. Early life Philippe Garrel was born in Boulogne-Billancourt in 1948, the son of actor Maurice Garrel and his wife. His brother, Thierry Garrel, is a producer. The younger Garrel became interested in film and started his career early, influenced by the new work of Jean-Luc Godard and François Truffaut. At the age of 16, Garrel wrote and directed his first film, ''Les Enfants désaccordés,'' in 1964. Awards In 1982, Garrel won the Prix Jean Vigo for the film ''L'Enfant secret''. Raúl Ernesto Ruiz Pino (french: Raoul Ruiz; 25 July 1941 – 19 August 2011) was an experimental Chilean filmmaker, writer and teacher whose work is best known in France. He directed more than 100 films. Biography The son of a ship's captain and a schoolteacher in southern Chile, Raúl Ruiz abandoned his university studies in theology and law to write 100 plays with the support of a Rockefeller Foundation grant. He went on to learn his craft working in Chilean and Mexican television and studying at film school in Argentina (1964). Back in Chile, he made his feature debut ''Three Sad Tigers'' (1968), sharing the Golden Leopard at the 1969 Locarno Film Festival. ''Une vie meilleure'', also known by its English release title ''A Better Life'', is a 2011 French film directed by Cédric Kahn and starring Guillaume Canet, Leïla Bekhti and introducing Slimane Khettabi. Plot Yann (Guillaume Canet) and Nadia (Leïla Bekhti) fall in love. Nadia has acquired a crumbling building in a Paris suburb and the couple decide to renovate it to launch a restaurant. Jonathan Jerzy Carnoy is an American writer and Film director, director currently living and working in France. Growing up in Menlo Park, California, he started working seriously in film while attending Colorado College, where he made several short comedic films. Following graduation, he worked in Hollywood as a camera assistant and production assistant on music videos, films and commercials including a stint on Twin Peaks, as production driver. He then attended New York University, NYU Graduate Film Program where he wrote and directed the award-winning short Dinner with Malibu.
