''Lights'' is the debut studio album by English singer and songwriter Ellie Goulding, released on 26 February 2010 by Polydor Records. Goulding collaborated with several producers on the album, including Starsmith, Fraser T. Smith, Frankmusik, Richard "Biff" Stannard, Ash Howes, Liam Howe, Fred Falke and Mumford & Sons' Ben Lovett. The album received generally positive reviews from music critics. Commercially, it debuted atop the UK Albums Chart with first-week sales of 36,854 copies. In North America, ''Lights'' charted at number 21 in the United States and at number 66 in Canada. Four singles were released from the album: "Under the Sheets", " Starry Eyed", "Guns and Horses" and "The Writer". The album was re-released as ''Bright Lights'' on 29 November 2010, including seven new tracks. Elena Jane Goulding ( ; born 30 December 1986) is an English singer and songwriter. Her career began when she met record producers Starsmith and Frankmusik, and she was later spotted by Jamie Lillywhite, who became her manager and Artists and repertoire, A&R. After signing to Polydor Records in July 2009, Goulding released her debut extended play, ''An Introduction to Ellie Goulding'', later that year. "The Writer" is a song by English singer and songwriter Ellie Goulding from her debut album, ''Lights'' (2010). It was released as the album's fourth and final (not including the ''Bright Lights'' re-release) single on 8 August 2010. Background Goulding told Sky Songs that "The Writer" is "the most personal and emotional song I've written yet", adding, "It's about how you'd do anything and change absolutely ''everything'' about yourself if necessary, just to be noticed by this one person." Critical reception ''The Observer''s Polly Vernon named "The Writer" the "love song of the summer" and called it "raw, eloquent, generally gorgeous", while describing Goulding's voice as "ghostly sweet, saved from sickliness by guttural Björk-ish quirks."
