Siuslaw River
The Siuslaw River ( ) is a river, about long, that flows to the Pacific Ocean coast of Oregon in the United States. It drains an area of about in the Central Oregon Coast Range southwest of the Willamette Valley and north of the watershed of the Umpqua River. It rises in the mountains of southwestern Lane County, about west of Cottage Grove. It flows generally west-northwest through the mountains, past Swisshome, entering the Pacific at Florence. The head of tide is upstream. It is part of the homeland of the Siuslaw people, after whom it is named. Citizens of the Siuslaw nation lived in villages along the river until 1860 when they were forcibly removed to an Indian reservation in Yachats whereupon their homes, farms, gardens and villages were destroyed and occupied by U.S. settler-colonists. Florence is a coastal city in Lane County, in the U.S. state of Oregon. Oregon Route 36 is an Oregon state highway that runs between the city of Mapleton in the Oregon Coast Range, and the city of Junction City in the Willamette Valley. OR 36 traverses the Mapleton–Junction City Highway No. 229 of the Oregon state highway system. The entire route of the highway is located within Lane County. Route description The western terminus of Oregon Route 36 is a junction with Oregon Route 126 in Mapleton. From Mapleton, the route heads due north through the Coast Range, then heads due east, following the course of the Siuslaw River. Mapleton, Oregon
Mapleton is an unincorporated community in Lane County, Oregon, United States. It is located on Oregon Route 126 and the Siuslaw River, west of Eugene and east of Florence. It is also the western terminus of Oregon Route 36. As of the 2000 census, Mapleton had a total population of 918. Demographics History Mapleton was likely named by Julia Ann "Grandma" Bean for the abundance of Bigleaf Maple trees in the area. Grandma Bean's husband was Obediah Roberts Bean, and their eldest child was judge Robert S. Bean. Pioneers of 1852, the Beans moved to the Mapleton area in 1886 and the town was named shortly thereafter. There was a post office called Seaton established north of the locality in 1885, and when it moved to the Mapleton area in 1889, Mrs. Bean became postmaster.
