''Brick City'' is an American documentary series on the Sundance Channel, created and directed by filmmakers Mark Benjamin and Marc Levin. The series captures the daily drama of a community striving to improve. Against great odds, Newark's citizens and its mayor, Cory Booker, fight to raise the city out of nearly a half century of violence, poverty and corruption. The 2014 Newark mayoral election took place in Newark, the most populous city in New Jersey, on May 13, 2014. The race was characterized as a contest between two candidates, Ras Baraka and Shavar Jeffries, both from Newark's South Ward. Elections for all seats on the nine member Municipal Council of Newark also took place. Luis A. Quintana, who had become Mayor of Newark following the resignation of Cory Booker (who had been elected to the United States Senate), did not seek the seat. The turnout was 45,071 representing 29.59% of registered voters. Shortly after polls closed, Baraka declared victory in the election, with 22,751 votes to 20,260 votes for Shavar Jeffries. Garry Francis McCarthy (born May 4, 1959) is the interim Chief of Police in Willow Springs, Illinois and previous Superintendent of the Chicago Police Department. He was a candidate for Mayor of Chicago in the 2019 Chicago mayoral election. Early life McCarthy was born and raised in the Bronx. He attended Cardinal Spellman High School and graduated in 1977.
