Brian Shefton
Brian Benjamin Shefton, FBA, FSA (11 August 1919 – 25 January 2012), born Bruno Benjamin Scheftelowitz, was a German-born British classical archaeologist. He was the founder of the Shefton Museum, which bore his name. In learned or professional societies, it refers to a privileged member who is specially elected in recognition of their work and achievements. Within the context of higher educational institutions, a fellow can be a member of a highly ranked group of teachers at a particular college or university or a member of the governing body in some universities (such as the Fellows of Harvard College); it can also be a specially selected postgraduate student who has been appointed to a post (called a fellowship) granting a stipend, research facilities and other privileges for a fixed period (usually one year or more) in order to undertake some advanced study or research, often in return for teaching services. Shefton Museum
The Shefton Museum of Greek Art and Archaeology was an archaeological museum at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, England, which opened in 1956 and closed in 2008. Its collections are now part of the Great North Museum: Hancock. History The museum was located in the Department of Classics in the Armstrong Building of the main University campus. It was founded in 1956 by Professor Brian B. Shefton with a grant of £20 from the University's Rector, Charles Bosanquet. Since then the collection has grown to over 800 objects. Professor B.B. Shefton was the curator until 1984 when his role was taken over by Professor Tony Spawforth. Shefton died on 25 January 2012, aged 92.
