Brian Johnson (pitcher)
Christopher Brian Johnson (born December 7, 1990) is an American former professional baseball pitcher who played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Boston Red Sox. Listed at and , he both throws and bats left-handed. Johnson was the 2012 recipient of the John Olerud Award. High school Johnson graduated from Cocoa Beach High School in Cocoa Beach, Florida, in 2009, where he was a five-year letterman for the Minutemen. He was coached during his high school baseball career by Matt Kellam and Rich Coleman. Johnson was named the ''Florida Today'' Baseball Player of the Year as well as First-Team All-State in Florida in both 2008 and 2009. He finished with 352 strikeouts in career innings and a career batting average of .481 with 98 runs, 40 doubles, 21 home runs and 95 RBI. In baseball, the pitcher is the player who throws ("pitches") the baseball from the pitcher's mound toward the catcher to begin each play, with the goal of retiring a batter, who attempts to either make contact with the pitched ball or draw a walk. Dick Howser Trophy
The Dick Howser Trophy is bestowed annually to the national college baseball player of the year. The award is named after former collegiate and Major League Baseball (MLB) player and manager Dick Howser, who died of brain cancer in 1987 at the age of 51. In that same year, the award was established by friends of Howser and presented to Mike Fiore, the inaugural winner. It is considered to be the Heisman Trophy of college baseball. Six winners of the Dick Howser Trophy are members of the National College Baseball Hall of Fame. The Cape Cod Baseball League (CCBL or Cape League) is a collegiate summer baseball wooden bat league located on Cape Cod in the U.S. state of Massachusetts. One of the nation's premier collegiate summer leagues, the league boasts over one thousand former players who have gone on to play in the major leagues. Collegiate Summer Baseball
Collegiate summer baseball leagues are amateur baseball leagues in the United States and Canada featuring players who have attended at least one year of college and have at least one year of athletic eligibility remaining. Generally, they operate from early June to early August. In contrast to college baseball, which allow aluminum or other composite baseball bats, players in these leagues use only wooden bats, hence the common nickname of these leagues as "wood-bat leagues". Collegiate summer leagues allow college baseball players the ability to compete using professional rules and equipment, giving them experience and allowing professional scouts the opportunity to observe players under such conditions. The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) is an association of baseball writers, broadcasters, and publicists in the United States. It was founded in 1962. The NCBWA compiles a preseason ranking of the top 35 teams in the nation, as voted on by its members.
