Brian Dobson (archaeologist)
Brian Dobson (13 September 1931 – 19 July 2012) was an English archaeologist, teacher and scholar. His specialisms were Hadrian's Wall and the Roman Army. He studied under Eric Birley and is a member of the so-called 'Durham School' of archaeology. He was a Reader Emeritus of Durham University. Personal life Dobson was born in Hartlepool in 1931 to a Plymouth Brethren family, attended school in Stockton before attending the University of Durham in 1949 to read Modern History as a member of Hatfield College. He fell under the influence of Eric Birley, who supervised his PhD on the role of primipilares in the Roman Army. He was married for over 50 years and had five children. Education and work From 1955-57 he did his National Service in the army, learning Russian at Bodmin and Crail and serving in the Intelligence Corps. Brian Ashley Dobson (born 1 March 1934) is an English former footballer who played as a defender in the Football League for Colchester United. Career After joining hometown club Colchester United as an apprentice, Dobson made his first-team debut for the club in a 1–0 away defeat to Aldershot on 24 March 1956. He made 24 appearances in the Football League for the U's between 1956 and 1959, with his final game coming on 7 November 1959, a 2–1 victory at Layer Road against Newport County. He later moved to Clacton Town. Bryan David Dobson (born 10 February 1960) is an Irish journalist, newscaster and presenter with RTÉ in Ireland. He currently presents the RTÉ: News at One. He previously presented '' RTÉ News: Six One,'' '' RTÉ News: Nine O'Clock'', most recently Morning Ireland, and occasionally '' RTÉ News: One O'Clock''. Early life Dobson was raised in Sandymount. He attended Newpark Comprehensive School, Blackrock, Dublin. It was one of the first schools to introduce the Transition Year programme. In it, he presented a half-hour radio programme. When he finished school, he attended a media course in the Rathmines College of Commerce, Dublin Institute of Technology. Broadcasting career Early career Dobson previously worked for the Dublin pirate station Radio Nova, hosting their nightly ''Dublin Today'' programme.
