Bremnes IL Players
Bremnes is a former municipality in the old Hordaland county, Norway. The municipality existed from 1916 until 1963, when it was merged into the new municipality of Bømlo which is now part of Vestland county. The administrative centre of the municipality was the village of Svortland, where Bremnes Church is located. The municipality covered the northern and western half of the island of Bømlo as well as the many small, surrounding islets. Slåtterøy Lighthouse
Slåtterøy Lighthouse ( no, Slåtterøy fyr) is a coastal lighthouse located in the municipality of Bømlo in southwestern Vestland county (previously Hordaland county), Norway. It sits at the western entrance to the Selbjørnsfjorden, marking an island-filled area northeast of Bømlo and northwest of Stord. History The lighthouse was established in 1859 and fully automated in 2003. The round, cast iron tower is painted red with one white horizontal band. At the top, there is a light that emits a 5,180,000 candela, the highest intensity among all lighthouses in Norway. The light sits at an elevation of above sea level and it emits a white light in the pattern of 2 flashes every 30 seconds. Bremnes Church
Bremnes Church ( no, Bremnes kirke) is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Bømlo Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. It is located in the village of Svortland on the island of Bømlo. It is the church for the Bremnes parish which is part of the Sunnhordland prosti ( deanery) in the Diocese of Bjørgvin. The white, wooden church was built in a long church design in 1869 using plans drawn up by the architect Jacob Wilhelm Nordan. The church seats about 750 people. History The earliest existing historical records of the church date back to the year 1327, but it was considered an old church at that time. The first church here was a wooden stave church that was located in the nearby farm area of Gåsland (across the lake from the present location). This church was likely built during the 13th century. Former Municipalities Of Norway
This is a list of former municipalities of Norway, i.e. municipalities that no longer exist. When the local council system was introduced in Norway in 1837-38, the country had 392 municipalities. In 1958 the number had grown to a total of 744 rural municipalities, 64 city municipalities as well as a small number of small seaports with '' ladested'' status. A committee led by Nikolai Schei, formed in 1946 to examine the situation, proposed hundreds of mergers to reduce the number of municipalities and improve the quality of local administration. Most of the mergers were carried out, albeit to significant popular protest. As of January 2006 there are 431 municipalities in Norway, and there are plans for further mergers and political pressure to do so. The Schei Committee ( no, Schei-komitéen) was a committee named by the Government of Norway to look into the organization of municipalities in Norway post-World War II. It convened in 1946, and its formal name was (The 1946 Committee on Municipal Division). Its more commonly used name derives from the committee leader, Nikolai Schei Nikolai Andreas Schei (9 May 1901 – 25 May 1985) was a Norwegian jurist and civil servant. Bømlo (island)
Bømlo (or Bømmeløy) is an island in Vestland county, Norway. At , it is the largest island in the island municipality of Bømlo, lying just off the western coast of Norway. The island sits at the northern entrance to the vast Hardangerfjorden, west of the Stokksundet strait, south of the Selbjørnsfjorden, and east of the North Sea. In the 1800s, the Kulleseid Canal was built across a small isthmus in the central part of the island, giving a shortcut from the eastern side of the island to the western side of the island. The large island of Stord lies just to the east and the smaller island of Moster lies to the southwest. There are hundreds of other small islands surrounding Bømlo. Sunnhordland
Sunnhordland is a traditional district in the western region of Norway. The district consists of the southern coastal regions of the old Hordaland county (now part of Vestland county). It includes the areas that surround the mouth of the Hardangerfjorden and the surrounding islands. Vestland
Vestland is a county in Norway established on 1 January 2020. The county is located in Western Norway and it is centred around the city of Bergen, Norway's second largest city.
