Mount Oldenburg
Mount Oldenburg () is a partly snow-covered peak 0.5 nautical miles (0.9 km) east of Mount Helms in the east part of Martin Hills. The peak was sketched by J. Campbell Craddock in January 1963. It was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) for Margaret Oldenburg, who has been interested in polar exploration and research for a number of years, and who is well known to polar workers because of her gifts of books, photographs and other materials to isolated IGY and Weather Bureau stations. Application of the name was suggested by a number of persons including Edward C. Thiel who, with J. Campbell Craddock, conducted an airlifted geophysical traverse along the 88th meridian near this feature in 1959–60. MS ''Oldenburg'' is a British passenger ferry serving the island of Lundy in the Bristol Channel. The ''Oldenburg'' was named after the former grand duchy of Oldenburg, Germany, and launched on 29 March 1958 in Bremen. On 6 August she was delivered to Deutsche Bundesbahn Schiffsdienst Wangerooge, and used for a ferry service between the mainland and the Frisian island of Wangerooge. She was first chartered in winter of 1975 by Reederei Warrings for duty-free shopping cruises in East Frisia. In 1982 she was sold to Harle-Reederei Warrings in Carolinensiel, Lower Saxony, Germany. ''Geheimrat'' was the title of the highest advising officials at the Imperial, royal or princely courts of the Holy Roman Empire, who jointly formed the ''Geheimer Rat'' reporting to the ruler. The term remained in use during subsequent monarchic reigns in German-speaking areas of Europe until the end of the First World War. At its origin the literal meaning of the word in German was 'trusted advisor' - the word "geheim" (secret) implying that such an advisor could be trusted with the Monarch's secrets (similar to "secretary" in English being linguistically related to "secret"). 'Duchess of Oldenburg' is an old Russian cultivar (1750 - 1799) of cultivated apple which has attractive streaks of yellow and red. It was commonly but not universally known in America simply as 'Oldenburg' after the American Pomological Society listed that as the official name, a name also used for the ' Geheimrat Dr. Oldenburg' cultivar. The skin of the apple is more prominently striped than that of 'Geheimrat Dr. Oldenburg'. The Oldenburg or Oldenburger is a warmblood horse from the north-western corner of Lower Saxony, what was formerly the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg. The breed was built on a mare base of all-purpose farm and carriage horses, today called the Alt-Oldenburger. The modern Oldenburg is managed by the Association of Breeders of the Oldenburger Horse, which enacts strict selection of breeding stock to ensure that each generation is better than the last. Oldenburgers are tall sport horses with excellent gaits and jumping ability. Claes Oldenburg (January 28, 1929 – July 18, 2022) was a Swedish-born American sculptor, best known for his public art installations typically featuring large replicas of everyday objects. Another theme in his work is soft sculpture versions of everyday objects. Many of his works were made in collaboration with his wife, Coosje van Bruggen, who died in 2009; they had been married for 32 years. Oldenburg lived and worked in New York City. SMS ''Möwe'' (; German: ''Seagull'') was a merchant raider of the Imperial German Navy which operated against Allies of World War I, Allied shipping during World War I. Disguised as a neutral cargo ship to enable it to get close to targets, the ''Möwe'' was effective at commerce raiding, sinking 40 ships in the course of the war. Early history Built by the Joh. C. SMS ''Oldenburg'' was an armored warship of the Imperial German Navy. Laid down at the AG Vulcan shipyard in Stettin in 1883, the ship was launched in December 1884 and commissioned into the Navy in April 1886. ''Oldenburg'' was intended to have been a fifth member of the of sortie corvettes, but budgetary limitations and dissatisfaction with the ''Sachsen'' class prompted a redesign that bore little resemblance to the earlier vessels. ''Oldenburg'' mounted her main battery of eight guns amidships, six in a central casemate on the main deck and two directly above them on the broadside.
