Breeders' Cup Marathon Top Three Finishers
This is a listing of the horses that finished in either first, second, or third place and the number of starters in the Breeders' Cup Marathon, a race run on dirt on the first day of the Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships. It was an ungraded race for its first two editions in 2008 and 2009, became a Grade III race in 2010 and was upgraded to GII status for 2011. On April 25, 2014, the Breeders' Cup announced that the Marathon would be discontinued. The event in 2014 was renamed to the ''Las Vegas Marathon'' as an undercard Breeders' Cup stakes races. In 2015 the event was raced under the name The Marathon. The Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance Stakes, is a Grade II American Thoroughbred horse race for three-year-olds and up, and contested on dirt at usually at a distance of miles. The race has a purse of US$350,000. It is run as part of the undercard for the Friday card of the Breeders' Cup. Race history The race was originally established in 2008 as part of the annual Breeders' Cup World Championships with its inaugural running on October 25, 2008 at a distance of miles as the Breeders' Cup Marathon. The inaugural running took place on the second day of the Breeders' Cup on the Pro-Ride synthetic dirt at the 2008 host track, Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California. In 2009, the distance was extended by 2 furlongs to miles. Due to technical requirements, the race was not eligible for classification as a graded stakes race in its first two runnings. Graded Stakes Race
A graded stakes race is a thoroughbred horse race in the United States that meets the criteria of the American Graded Stakes Committee of the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association (TOBA). A specific grade level (I, II, III or listed) is then assigned to the race, based on statistical analysis of the quality of the field in previous years, provided the race meets the minimum purse criteria for the grade in question. In Canada, a similar grading system is maintained by the Jockey Club of Canada. Graded stakes races are similar to Group races in Europe but the grading is more dynamic in North America. The grading system was designed in 1973 and first published in 1974. The original purpose of grading was to identify the most competitive races, which helps horsemen make comparisons of the relative quality of bloodstock for breeding and sales purposes. Afleet Again (April 28, 2007 - April 12, 2018) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse best known for winning the 2011 Breeders' Cup Marathon Stakes as a 41–1 upset. Background Afleet Again, a gray horse, was foaled in Kentucky. He was bred by Roll Z Dice Racing Stable. He was sired by Afleet Alex, the 2005 Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes winner. Eldaafer (foaled March 13, 2005) is a retired racehorse best known for his wins in the Fall Championship Stakes, Breeders' Cup Marathon, Brooklyn Handicap, and Greenwood Cup. Mastery (foaled 25 February 2006) is a British Thoroughbred racehorse. In a racing career which lasted from October 2008 until 2010 he ran thirteen times and won five races. As a three-year-old in 2009 he won the Derby Italiano and the St Leger. In 2010 he won the Hong Kong Vase. Background Mastery is a bay horse sired by Sulamani the winner of several major races including the Prix du Jockey Club and the International Stakes. His dam Moyesii won only one minor race but was a daughter of the Haydock Sprint Cup and Prix Maurice de Gheest winner Cherokee Rose. Racing career 2008: two-year-old season Mastery made his debut in a maiden race at Nottingham in October 2008.
