The Bredevoort witch trials took place in Bredevoort Bredevoort ( Low Saxon: ) is a small city with city privileges of about 1600 inhabitants in the municipality of Aalten, Netherlands. The witch trials of 1610 started when Jenneken ter Honck of Dinxperlo was prosecuted accused of having caused the illness of life stock by use of sorcery. She confessed during torture and named Gertken op 't Goir as her accomplice. She was tortured and named accomplices in turn, which made the witch trial expand. More people, both women and men, where prosecuted, subjected to ordeal by water, tortured to confess and name accomplices, who were then also arrested. Bredevoort (Low Saxon: ) is a small city with city privileges of about 1600 inhabitants in the municipality of Aalten, Netherlands. It is between the towns of Aalten and Winterswijk. There are now more than 20 second-hand book shops in the town. Bredevoort was a ''Heerlijkheid'' and a separate municipality until 1818. The villages Aalten, Dinxperlo and Winterswijk included the fiefdom of Bredevoort when it became a part of Aalten in 1818. The witch trials in the Netherlands were among the smallest in Europe. The Netherlands are known for having discontinued their witchcraft executions earlier than any other European country. The provinces began to phase out capital punishment for witchcraft beginning in 1593. The last trial in the Northern Netherlands took place in 1610. 164 to about 200 people were killed in Dutch witch trials, rising to potentially 300 victims including casualties from regions that were under Spanish jurisdiction but eventually became part of the Netherlands. The victims were overwhelmingly women. Belief in witches persisted in some areas into the nineteenth century and in 1823 one woman underwent the water ordeal on her own request with the support of the authorities to prove her innocence to her superstitious neighbours.
