Brecknock Society And Museum Friends
Brecknock Society and Museum Friends ( cy, Cymdeithas Brycheiniog a Chyfeillion yr Amgueddfa) is a Welsh historical society that promotes "the study and understanding of the Archaeology, History, Geology, Natural History, the Arts and Literature of Wales, especially the historic county of Brecknock." The Brecknock Society was founded in 1928. In 1929 they made a successful appeal for the government to purchase Tretower Court, which had become badly neglected. The society handed the museum and its collections to the Breconshire County Council in 1950. In 1986 the Brecknock Society merged with the Friends of Brecknock Museum to form the Brecknock Society and Museum Friends. The organization publishes the historical journal ''Brycheiniog'' since 1955. It also awards the annual Roland Mathias Prize, a literary prize named after author Roland Mathias. Brecknock
Brecon (; cy, Aberhonddu; ), archaically known as Brecknock, is a market town in Powys, mid Wales. In 1841, it had a population of 5,701. The population in 2001 was 7,901, increasing to 8,250 at the 2011 census. Historically it was the county town of Brecknockshire (Breconshire); although its role as such was eclipsed with the formation of the County of Powys, it remains an important local centre. Tretower Court
Tretower Court () is a medieval fortified manor house in Wales, situated in the village of Tretower, near Crickhowell in modern-day Powys, previously within the historical county of Breconshire or Brecknockshire. Y Gaer (English: ''The Fortress'') is a municipal structure in Glamorgan Street, Brecon, Powys, Wales. The complex, which includes a museum, an art gallery and a library and incorporates a structure which was once the shire hall for Brecknockshire, is a Grade II* listed building. History The original shire hall building was commissioned by the justices as accommodation for the quarter sessions and for the regular assizes. It was designed by Thomas Henry Wyatt and David Brandon in the neoclassical style, built in ashlar stone and was completed in 1843. Brycheiniog (magazine)
''Brycheiniog'' is an annual historical and archaeological academic journal published by the Brecknock Society and Museum Friends, covering Brecknockshire (modern Powys; the old kingdom of Brycheiniog) in Wales. The journal was established in 1955 and has been well received. ''Museums Journal'' wrote of the early editions, "The geological history of Brecknock was written for the first volume," and that became the foundation for the historical and archaeological work that followed. A few years later, Glanmor Williams, editor of the ''Welsh History Review'', published an article that praised "the high academic standards of the journal since it first appeared in 1955" and noted it is "lavishly illustrated with photographs, diagrams, and tables." Roland Mathias
Roland Glyn Mathias (4 September 1915 – 16 August 2007) was a Welsh writer, known for his poetry and short stories. He was also a literary critic, and responsible with Raymond Garlick for the success of the literary magazine ''Dock Leaves'' (from 1949), later from 1957 ''The Anglo-Welsh Review''. He edited it from 1961 to 1976. His other writing includes books on David Jones, Vernon Watkins and John Cowper Powys, and ''Anglo-Welsh Poetry 1480-1980'' with Raymond Garlick. Early life Mathias was born at Talybont-on-Usk, south-east of Brecon in Powys, in 1915 and brought up mostly in England and Germany. He graduated in history from Jesus College, Oxford.
