Breakthrough Breast Cancer
Breakthrough Breast Cancer was a United Kingdom charity whose mission was to "save lives through improving early diagnosis, developing new treatments and preventing all types of breast cancer". In 2015, Breakthrough Breast Cancer merged with another UK charity, Breast Cancer Campaign, to form the UK's largest breast cancer research charity - Breast Cancer Now. In 2019, Breast Cancer Care merged with Breast Cancer Now and the two organizations together became known as Breast Cancer Now. History Breakthrough Breast Cancer was envisioned by Bill Freedman and his children. Freedman's wife, actress Toby Robins (1931–1986), died from breast cancer in 1986. With Barry Gusterson of the Institute of Cancer Research, Freedman concluded that a new approach was needed to tackle that disease. The National Cancer Research Institute (NCRI) is a UK-wide partnership between cancer research funders, which promotes collaboration in cancer research. Mammography (also called mastography) is the process of using low-energy X-rays (usually around 30 kVp) to examine the human breast for diagnosis and screening. The goal of mammography is the early detection of breast cancer, typically through detection of characteristic masses or microcalcifications. As with all X-rays, mammograms use doses of ionizing radiation to create images. These images are then analyzed for abnormal findings. The Institute of Cancer Research (the ICR) is a public research institute and a member institution of the University of London in London, United Kingdom, specialising in oncology. It was founded in 1909 as a research department of the Royal Marsden Hospital and joined the University of London in 2003. Barry Gusterson
Barry Austin Gusterson (born 24 October 1946) is a British pathologist who has been Professor of Pathology at the University of Glasgow since 2000 and Head of Forensic Medicine and Forensic Science, since 2006. Prior to this he was Founding Director of the Toby Robins Breakthrough Breast Cancer Research Centre at the Institute of Cancer Research and Professor of Pathology and Head of the Section of Molecular Pathology at the Institute of Cancer Research. Education Gusterson was educated at Colchester Royal Grammar School and obtained a BSc in Physiology at St Bartholomew's Hospital. He then earned a dental degree at the Royal Dental Hospital and a medical degree at St Bartholomew’s Hospital. He also studied at the Institute for Cancer Research.
