Breaking The Silence (film)
''Breaking the Silence'' () is a 2000 Chinese film directed by Sun Zhou. It was China's submission to the 73rd Academy Awards for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, but was not accepted as a nominee. ''Breaking the Silence'' stars the internationally known Gong Li as a single mother who struggles to raise her deaf child. The film premiered internationally at the 2000 Berlin International Film Festival. The film was one of three films voted Best Picture in the 2001 Hundred Flowers Awards. Liu Heng (; born in May, 1954) is a Chinese writer. He is generally seen as a realist writer. The People's Republic of China has submitted films for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film since 1979. The award is handed out annually by the United States Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States that contains primarily non-English dialogue. China has submitted more than twenty films for Oscar consideration, two of which were nominated for an Oscar. Both of these films were directed by acclaimed Chinese director Zhang Yimou, whose films have been submitted by China eight times. Zhang was also nominated for an Oscar for a third film, as a representative of British Hong Kong.
