''Break the Bank'' is an American quiz show which aired variouslyand sometimes co-existed in separate radio and television formson Mutual Radio (where it was originally launched, in 1945), ABC Radio and NBC Radio Network, as well ABC (first televised version, in 1948), CBS and NBC television, from 1945 to 1957. From October 1956 to January 1957, NBC aired a short-lived prime-time television version called ''Break the $250,000 Bank''. Broadcast history Sponsored by Vicks, the series began on Mutual Radio on October 20, 1945, heard Saturdays until April 13, 1946. Initially, it featured different hosts each week, including John Reed King and Johnny Olson. Bert Parks became the full-time host in 1946. The questions were written by Joseph Nathan Kane, the author of ''Famous First Facts'', who hand-delivered the sealed envelopes to the radio studio. Ethel Waters
Ethel Waters (October 31, 1896 – September 1, 1977) was an American singer and actress. Waters frequently performed jazz, swing, and pop music on the Broadway stage and in concerts. She began her career in the 1920s singing blues. ''Break the Bank'' is a game show created by Richard S. Kline. It aired in syndication from September 16, 1985 to June 20, 1986, with repeats airing until September 12. It was not related to two previous shows by the same name. The series debuted with Gene Rayburn as host, with Joe Farago taking over in December 1985. Kandace Kuehl was the co-host for the first three shows and was then replaced afterward with 1983 Miss USA winner Julie Hayek. Voice-over artist Michael Hanks was the announcer. Originally, Rayburn was supposed to host a revival of his hit signature game show ''Match Game'' in order to be paired up with ''The Price Is Right'' hosted by Tom Kennedy, but it was scrapped as reruns of the 1979–82 daily version aired in its place instead. ''Break the Bank'' is an American game show created by Jack Barry and Dan Enright and produced by their production company, Barry & Enright Productions. It was the first game show packaged by Barry and Enright as a tandem since their fall from grace following the 1950s quiz show scandals. The show aired in the spring and summer of 1976 as an ABC daytime series hosted by Tom Kennedy, and in weekly syndication during the 1976–1977 season, hosted by creator-producer Barry. Game play ''Break the Bank'' featured nine celebrities, and pitted one male and one female contestant against one another (similar to ''The Hollywood Squares'').
